Polynesian Ethnography for the Professional and Layperson

Firth follows in the footsteps of his professor, Malinowski, documenting in as much detail the Tikopia as Malinowski did for the Trobriands. I found it interesting that Firth did not reject history and includes more of cultural anthropology than did his profesor.
The subtitle, A Study of Kinship, speaks to the profession. Firth carefully explains how Tikopians trace descent in pragmatic terms, especially in royal or chiefly lines, to form what he calls 'ramages', a term which has not widely spread in the field of kinship study. Nevertheless, his exploration tells us much about how kinship works 'on the ground', a subject in short supply. We can appreciate how his attention to detail has allowed him to generalize so brilliantly. Elements of Social Organization.: (Josiah Mason Lectures, 1947)
While the focus of the book is on kinship, one incident stands out in my mind that explains how Tikopians reason much like ourselves, but still we can regard them as 'superstitious. A Tikopian sitting under a house on stiltes was killed when the house colllapsed on him. The Tikopians immediately set about finding the witch who caused his death. Firth realized Australian authorities would judge the murder of the witch harshly so he argued with his informants that stilts often were eaten by termites and collapsed. Tikopians readily agreed but answered that the question was 'why was this particular man sitting under that particular house at the particular time the house collapsed'. Anyone involved in a deadly accident will recognize that our answer, 'it was just an accident', is insufficient under the circumstances.
One can appreciate that We, the Tikopians is much more than a study of kinship as Firth proves with his further work. Religion: A Humanist Interpretation
