Chronicles of WWII’s submarine war remain popular, because while most combatants are cogs in gigantic military machines, a submarine lends itself to individuation. It often operated alone, and its combat success depended crucially on its commander’s risk-taking aggressiveness. Relying on the centrality of the commander, Scott recounts the Pacific war patrols of three U.S. submarines, of which two today are on display, the Drum in Mobile, Alabama, and the Silversides in Muskegon, Michigan. The third, the Tang, sank in battle. Providing character sketches of the boats’ commanders that note leadership style and pugnacity, Scott puts each on the periscope and describes the ensuing patrol. James Scott is a former investigative reporter with The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was named Journalist of the Year in 2003 by the South Carolina Press Association. A 2007 Nieman Fellow for Journalism at Harvard University, Scott is the author of The Attack on the Liberty, which won the Samuel Eliot Morison Award. He lives in Charleston, South Carolina.

Excellent Book About Three Submarines And The Heroic Crews Who Served On Them

In the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor, an order was issued to execute unrestricted submarine warfare on Japan. During the course of the Pacific War, the American submarine service wreaked havoc on Japanese merchant shipping. Over 1,000 Japanese merchant ships were sunk during the war, along with dozens of warships. But the price was high; 52 American submarines were lost during the war. "The War Below" describes the war patrols of three American submarines: Drum, Silversides, and the immortal Tang.
Each of these boats was lead by one of the "new breed" of American submarine skipper. These men went to submarine school expecting to be fighting an enemy one day. Thus, they developed aggressive tactics, unlike older skippers trained in peace time. Names such as Burlingame, Coye, Morton, and O'Kane would soon become etched in the annals of submarine history. These aggressive skippers and their crews carried the war directly to the Japanese homeland. It became so dangerous for Japanese merchant shipping that it was unsafe for the ships to even sail in their home waters.
Along with vividly describing the submarine tactics used by American skippers, this book also gives the reader a general overview of the war in the Pacific. Major campaigns are discussed, and the role of submarines is fitted into each.
Author James Scott also describes life aboard the submarines. He discusses the fear of a sustained depth charge attack, the exhilaration of a successful sinking, and some unusual aspects, including an emergency appendectomy performed on a wardroom table.
"The War Below" is a fine book that accurately and interestingly describes the exploits of three of America's greatest submarines. Silversides, Drum, and Tang combined to sink over sixty enemy vessels, and their exploits have become legendary. The book is well-researched, well-written and contains good information about the American submarine service in World War II. Highly recommended.

Obviously I enjoyed the book. I am Creed Burlingame's nephew and served in nuclear submarines during the Cold War. I lived near Creed during the early part of my 23 years of such service. The book certainly captures the kind of man Creed was all of his long life, a quite Kentucky gentleman yet brave and determined as well.
I am also a student of submarine history and found the depth of research and details contained in this book to be superb as well. While technology has changed dramatically, the challenges facing the skippers and the crews in this book are REAL, in my view, and timeless to a degree.
Each man, skipper or not, described in this book left a legacy behind that is applicable to submarine operations today. How to train crews, operate undetected, alone and with no immediate support, while in hostile waters is simply what submarines have always done and hopefully will always do in the future.
Connecting those dots, how Silversides, Drum and Tang, operated in WWII bears careful consideration by all professional submariners today. Perhaps such discussions can be included in a sequel to this excellent book by an author that surely knows how to do research and write as well.

One look at the phenomenal James Hornfischer's strong endorsement of this book and there was no stopping me getting a copy as soon as possible. Five stars is only a nominal assessment in this case, as Mr. Scott's book is better than that. Painstakingly researched and elegantly written, "The War Below" is a must read for WWII and history buffs but I hope it reaches a far broader audience. Americans should know this story well, for without the nearly unimaginable courage and skills displayed under the most stressful if not horrific conditions imaginable by our submariners in WWII, we would not know and enjoy our world today in its present form. Were it not for the inclusion of only one high level map of the Pacific (several more would have been helpful) and the too small (for me, at least) font, this might be a perfect book. The patrol sequences, frequently ending in the fiery and acrid destruction of enemy shipping and warships, are not merely thrilling but highly educational. One learns time and again of duty fulfilled that in fact went well beyond the call of duty. The recounting of a pharmacist's mate performing an emergency appendectomy while the skipper held the boat deep enough to minimize turbulence is simply beyond the pale. Get this book and devour it. And if you can get to the end-- right through the passages about our men being tortured in captivity-- without being emotionally overcome then perhaps you should make an appointment with the Wizard of Oz to see if you can be granted a heart. Six stars.
