About the Author

Laura N. Gitlin, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Community Public Health in the School of Nursing with joint appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University. She is the founding director of the Center for Innovative Care in Aging at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. The Center seeks to develop, test, and implement novel services, programs, and models that advance and support the well-being of diverse older adults, their families, and communities; enhance the yield of programs, policies, practices, and tools; and provide mentorship and research training in behavioral intervention research. Dr. Gitlin has been involved in behavioral intervention research for close to 30 years. Throughout these years, she has worked collaboratively with health and human service professionals and community agencies to develop and test a wide range of behavioral interventions. Her programs of research are multifold and include psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental approaches to address challenges of aging including physical disability, depressive symptoms, neuropsychiatric behaviors, and family caregiving. Dr. Gitlin is nationally and internationally recognized in these areas and a well-funded researcher, having received continuous funding from federal agencies and private foundations to test interventions. Some of these interventions have been translated for implementation in a variety of settings including home care, adult day care, hospitals, and senior centers. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and is a coauthor of a research text on quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, a book on the environmental skill–building intervention for family caregivers, a book on physical function in older adults, and a guide booklet for families challenged by behavioral symptoms common in persons with dementia.

She is a well-funded researcher, having received continuous research and training grants from federal agencies and private foundations for close to 28 years. A theme throughout her research is applying a social ecological perspective and a person-directed approach as well as collaborating with community organizations and health professionals to maximize the relevance and impact of intervention strategies. She is also involved in translating and implementing her team’s proven interventions for delivery in different practice settings globally and in the United States.

Dr. Gitlin is a recipient of numerous awards including the 2009 Eastern Pennsylvania Geriatric Society Charles Ewing Presidential Award for outstanding contribution to geriatric care; the 2010 United Way Champion Impact Award for Healthy Aging at Home; the 2010 National Institute of Senior Centers Award with Center in the Park; the 2010 MetLife Award for translating the Skills2Care Program (a dementia caregiver intervention program) with Fox Rehabilitation (a home health agency); the 2011 John Mackey Award for Excellence in Dementia Care from Johns Hopkins University; and the 2014 M. Powell Lawton Award from the Gerontological Society of America.

Sara J. Czaja, PhD, is a Leonard M. Miller Professor of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, with joint appointments in Psychology and Industrial Engineering at the University of Miami. She is also the scientific director of the Center on Aging at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the director of the Center on Research and Education for Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE). CREATE is funded by the National Institute on Aging and involves collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Florida State University. The focus of CREATE is on older adults and their interactions with technology systems in work, health care, and everyday living domains. A particular emphasis is on how technology can be used as a mechanism for the delivery of interventions to foster independence among older people.

Dr. Czaja has extensive experience in aging research and a long commitment to developing intervention strategies to improve the quality of life for older adults and their families. She has been an active researcher in this area for more than 25 years. Her specific areas of research include aging and cognition; aging and health care informatics; family caregiving; older workers; training; and functional assessment. She brings a unique focus to these issues with her combined background in engineering and the behavioral sciences. She has broad experience with research methodologies in both laboratory and field settings and with translational research. She has received extensive funding from the National Institutes of Health as well as other federal agencies and foundations for her research. Dr. Czaja is very well published in the field of aging, and has written numerous book chapters and scientific articles. She has also collaborated with community organizations, health care providers, and with industry. She recently coauthored a book with other members of the CREATE team concerning the design of technology systems for older adult populations, and a book on training older adults. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the Gerontological Society of America. In addition, she is the current president of Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) of the American Psychological Association. She is also a member of the National Academy of Science/National Research Council Board on Human Systems Integration.

Great, solid version

This is the classic Three Little Pigs story to a T.

The author doesn't skirt around the original story. Nope, in this version (just as in the original), the wolf eats the first two pigs. Well, why not? That's what wolves *do*. People eat pigs as well! And the pig ends up eating the wolf at the end. Well, why not? Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, and I gotta watch that big bad wolf die.

My nieces love this book. I do too :)

the 3 "wittle" pigs

This story has always been a favorite of our 3 year old son Sam. He is particularly enamored of this version however. When we had to return it to the library he suggested, "Can you go on the computer and get me my own?" What more can we say- the 3 year old is well versed with amazon

Not a great choice

This story definitely did not seem age appropriate. This book is recommended for children ages 3-8. Two of the pigs are eaten in the story, which can be disturbing to younger children. The size of the text is enlarged during the times when the wolf is being `bad' or danger is being introduced. That is a good way to allow the reader to raise his or her voice at these times while reading, but again, that can be scary for a child to hear. The colors in the illustrations are a bit dull to set the mood of the sad, scary story in my opinion. The plot is alright and somewhat easy to understand and follow. But I highly do not recommend reading this to young children. They would not predict that the pigs would be eaten and that the wolf would be eaten at the end. A way to use this book in the classroom would be to read a few other versions of the three little pigs to the class and compare and contrast them. Have the students work in groups to formulate similarities and differences of the characters, plot, setting and more.

The greatest interest in the study of birds centers in their home life. Soon after their arrival from their winter quarters, all birds take upon themselves the duties of reproduction, the first step of which is the securing of a satisfactory location; some species, such as Auklets, Petrels, Burrowing Owls, Kingfishers, Bank Swallows, etc., nest at the end of burrows or holes in the ground; a great many nest upon the ground, some laying their eggs upon the bare sand, leaves, or rock, while others build nests, either bulky or slight as suits their respective tastes; hundreds construct their homes among the branches of trees or bushes, some close to the ground, others among the highest branches, and still others swaying from the ends of the outermost limbs; other species lay their eggs at the bottom of holes in trees, either in natural cavities or in holes dug by their own efforts, the most noticeable in the latter class being the Woodpeckers, which often chisel their way into limbs of living trees.

The study of nests alone is most interesting; the rude and slight platforms of the Herons, Cuckoos, Grosbeaks, etc.; the rough but substantial structures of the Robin; and the exquisite, architectural creations of the Hummingbirds, Flycatchers, Orioles, Bush-tits, etc. Surely the work of some of these little feathered creatures, these "homes without hands," show as great a degree of skill and artistic temperament as is seen in the human race.

The eggs of the different species vary through all the tints from white to blue, green and brown, some unmarked, others handsomely specked, spotted, blotched or wreathed with different shades of brown, lilac and lavender, and their sizes vary from that of the diminutive Hummingbird to the Albatross, Swan and California Vulture as the largest North American eggs, and the Ostrich of Africa whose egg will contain several quarts.

The nesting season ranges from January with some of the Owls to August in the case of the American Goldfinch, but by far the majority of species lay their eggs during May or June. Chester A. Reed's study of the eggs of North American birds has for many years been the comprehensive work in this area. Unfortunately, it has long been Out of print and, due to many changes in nomenclature and classification, somewhat out of date. Thoroughly revised by Paul A. Buckley of Cornell University's famed Laboratory of Ornithology, with all material brought up to (late in accordance with the American Ornithologists' Union 1957 Check list, the book is now available in its first low-cost edition.

While Reed often used the terms `species," `race," "form," and "variety" interchangeably, Buckley has modernized the terminology, rearranging classifications to coincide with the modern species concept. Nearly every North American bird (loons, gulls and terns, (lucks, geese, cranes, shorebirds, owls, hawks and falcons, jays, parrots, cuckoos, woodpeckers, wrens, nuthatches, thrushes, swallows, finches, etc.) is included. For each one, details are given on the common and official names, range, and general life history, stressing nesting and laying habits.

There follows a thorough description of the eggs of each species, including size, color and surface texture. Alongside this descriptive text are more than 560 actual life-sized photographs illustrating both field and museum egg specimens. 82 additional photographs taken in the field show undisturbed nests and eggs in their natural sites, and hundreds of line drawings sketched in the margin provide still another identification aid by showing what the mature bird looks like.

While collecting eggs is undesirable and often illegal, the study of eggs, when (lone without sin disturbing the nest, can be both profitable and fascinating. This book is an invaluable reference and identification guide in such activities for ornithologists, amateur and professional naturalists, and bird watchers.

The Kindle edition fraught with computer-generated errors?

After receiving the Kindle edition of this otherwise excellent book,
it quickly emerged that it seems to have suffered gross "translation errors"
perhaps while being converted from one computer format to another.
The myriad peculiar combinations of keyboard symbols that crop up with annoying frequency
can only be assigned to a computer malfunction.
At first I thought it was human typographical errors,
but as I read on it became clear that no human could have erred to this extraordinary extent!
Other than that factor, this is quite a good book for those who like this sort of thing.

This scholarly work proposes that an integral feature of both film and television is the "mobilized virtual gaze." This virtual gaze "is not a direct perception but a received perception mediated through representation." Also, the virtual gaze is a standard part of postmodern society, along with a diminished capacity to retain the past. Drawing from a wide range of sources, Friedberg traces the development of the virtual gaze from Jeremy Bentham's proposed glass prison, the Paris arcades, the creation of department stores, architecture, tourism, and the shopping mall. If the disappearance of history is indeed a symptom of postmodernity, then the author feels that movies and especially videos have added significantly to this development. Her interesting thesis is well presented. Academic collections should consider.

Or the "Phantom of Fine Hall," a figure many students had seen shuffling around the corridors of the math and physics building wearing purple sneakers and writing numerology treatises on the blackboards. The Phantom was John Nash, one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his generation, who had spiraled into schizophrenia in the 1950s. His most important work had been in game theory, which by the 1980s was underpinning a large part of economics. When the Nobel Prize committee began debating a prize for game theory, Nash's name inevitably came up--only to be dismissed, since the prize clearly could not go to a madman. But in 1994 Nash, in remission from schizophrenia, shared the Nobel Prize in economics for work done some 45 years previously.

Nasar has written a notable biography of mathematical genius John Forbes Nash (b. 1928), a founder of game theory, a RAND Cold War strategist and winner of a 1994 Nobel Prize in economics. She charts his plunge into paranoid schizophrenia beginning at age 30 and his spontaneous recovery in the early 1990s after decades of torment. He attributes his remission to will power; he stopped taking antipsychotic drugs in 1970 but underwent a half-dozen involuntary hospitalizations. Born in West Virginia, the flamboyant mathematical wizard rubbed elbows at Princeton and MIT with Einstein, John von Neumann and Norbert Wiener. He compartmentalized his secret personal life, shows Nasar, hiding his homosexual affairs with colleagues from his mistress, a nurse who bore him a son out of wedlock, while he also courted Alicia Larde, an MIT physics student whom he married in 1957. Their son, John, born in 1959, became a mathematician and suffers from episodic schizophrenia. Alicia divorced Nash in 1963, but they began living together again as a couple around 1970. Today Nash, whose mathematical contributions span cosmology, geometry, computer architecture and international trade, devotes himself to caring for his son. Nasar, an economics correspondent for the New York Times, is equally adept at probing the puzzle of schizophrenia and giving a nontechnical context for Nash's mathematical and scientific ideas.

A Beautiful Book

If you enjoyed the movie "A Beautiful Mind" you will love this book. It is far richer in detail, context, and let's us a bit deeper into why what Nash accomplished was so beautiful. If you find the movie a bit of a problem because it seems a bit too glossy for the facts, again, you will love this book.
For me, the movie did a marvelous job of embodying the spirit of the book. To delve more deeply into the facts of Nash's life and accomplishments and his illness would require a documentary or a mini-series. The movie is really a narrative poem about Nash. This book is about the people and their experiences. It is NOT a direct exposition of Nash's technical achievements. There are other books such as "The Essential John Nash" that provide that information.
In this masterful book we find out more about his youth, his life at college, his work after he received his doctorate and his breakdown and illness as well as the nature and scope of his recovery. There is real sorrow and loss in the book, but there is also strength and tenacity that refuses to yield to hopelessness and despair. This is a book about the people and how they lived during the storms of his achievements and his illness.
I am not qualified to discuss the quality of Nash's achievements, but from the admiration lavished on him by his peers and how they rallied round him it is clear that Nash was given immense gifts that he developed and used in ways that have benefited all of us even if we are unaware it.
It seems that this is the nature of the gifts scientists and mathematicians give us. We are unaware of them until another person makes them part of other products, services, and policies that directly affect us. And even then we are unaware of the breakthroughs that made these wonderful additions to our lives possible.
We should be grateful to Sylvia Nasar for helping us see the gifts we received from Dr. Nash and the sacrifices his wife and others made to make them possible.

A Martian Told Me to Read This Book

Saw and tremendously enjoyed the movie, but kept thinking, this can't be the real story of John Nash. As impressed as I was with director Ron Howard's construction and Russell Crowe's acting, I still left the theater with too many questions...and doubts.
For the first time I can recall, I departed a movie and went directly to a bookstore to buy the book. (I'm still 100% on never purchasing a soundtrack CD from one of those theater vending machines.) This is NOT the same story as the movie. Nasar's biography of Nash is a thoroughly researched, riviting story that took me to worlds I've never known (advanced mathmatics and severe mental illness). It is a fast-paced read, a book I could not put down.
There has been controversy about some of the details from the book being left out of the movie, but I think Ron Howard departed masterfully from the book to provide the escence of Nash's story without bogging down in some confusing issues that Nasar, in a book form, handles with appropriate detail and context.
Watch the movie and read the book. Both are great. But they are different.

Maximum Involvement

I was led to the book by a movie review in the NYT that said the movie did not tell the story of the book and that it was very serious and important story. I am writing this review because having read it I would like to discuss it.
Though there is some redundancy in the text, I still read every word. The exploration of the themes of genius and acknowledged contributions, followed by more than 30 years of paranoid schizophrenia and then remission and recognition is gripping.
The care of the biographer in acknowledging and noting her sources is very unusual for most popular and semi-popular biographers. That she took her subject and his work and his journey seriously is never in doubt. There is no pseudo psych. There is lots of exploration. The author explores very sensitive areas thou rally, but sensitively.
Nash's homosexuality, his seeming contempt for people and their feelings nothing is left out. His forty-five year relationship with the woman who has been his wife is not a simple story and the author takes her time to present the facts. Still, she does not judge, she reports.
I did enjoy the sections about Princeton and MIT and the world of mathematicians. An economics PhD candidate I had dinner with said, "I heard it's all about relationships and not mathematics". The mathematicians in the book say economics is not very serious math. (Nash seems to agree with that in an ironic way.)
In short I was charmed by the book, it gave me a lot a material with which to consider the nature of genius, mathematical accomplishment, mental illness and (particularly the effect of other people on ones sense of self) and what is meant by a whole life.
I understand that there is a lot of talk about love in the movie. In the book the word is not mentioned once-these are not touchy feely folk, still love and friendship are very important to the story.

Chronicles of WWII’s submarine war remain popular, because while most combatants are cogs in gigantic military machines, a submarine lends itself to individuation. It often operated alone, and its combat success depended crucially on its commander’s risk-taking aggressiveness. Relying on the centrality of the commander, Scott recounts the Pacific war patrols of three U.S. submarines, of which two today are on display, the Drum in Mobile, Alabama, and the Silversides in Muskegon, Michigan. The third, the Tang, sank in battle. Providing character sketches of the boats’ commanders that note leadership style and pugnacity, Scott puts each on the periscope and describes the ensuing patrol. Excellent Book About Three Submarines And The Heroic Crews Who Served On Them

In the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor, an order was issued to execute unrestricted submarine warfare on Japan. During the course of the Pacific War, the American submarine service wreaked havoc on Japanese merchant shipping. Over 1,000 Japanese merchant ships were sunk during the war, along with dozens of warships. But the price was high; 52 American submarines were lost during the war. "The War Below" describes the war patrols of three American submarines: Drum, Silversides, and the immortal Tang.

Each of these boats was lead by one of the "new breed" of American submarine skipper. These men went to submarine school expecting to be fighting an enemy one day. Thus, they developed aggressive tactics, unlike older skippers trained in peace time. Names such as Burlingame, Coye, Morton, and O'Kane would soon become etched in the annals of submarine history. These aggressive skippers and their crews carried the war directly to the Japanese homeland. It became so dangerous for Japanese merchant shipping that it was unsafe for the ships to even sail in their home waters.

Along with vividly describing the submarine tactics used by American skippers, this book also gives the reader a general overview of the war in the Pacific. Major campaigns are discussed, and the role of submarines is fitted into each.

Author James Scott also describes life aboard the submarines. He discusses the fear of a sustained depth charge attack, the exhilaration of a successful sinking, and some unusual aspects, including an emergency appendectomy performed on a wardroom table.

"The War Below" is a fine book that accurately and interestingly describes the exploits of three of America's greatest submarines. Silversides, Drum, and Tang combined to sink over sixty enemy vessels, and their exploits have become legendary. The book is well-researched, well-written and contains good information about the American submarine service in World War II. Highly recommended.

Obviously I enjoyed the book. I am Creed Burlingame's nephew and served in nuclear submarines during the Cold War. I lived near Creed during the early part of my 23 years of such service. The book certainly captures the kind of man Creed was all of his long life, a quite Kentucky gentleman yet brave and determined as well.

I am also a student of submarine history and found the depth of research and details contained in this book to be superb as well. While technology has changed dramatically, the challenges facing the skippers and the crews in this book are REAL, in my view, and timeless to a degree.

Each man, skipper or not, described in this book left a legacy behind that is applicable to submarine operations today. How to train crews, operate undetected, alone and with no immediate support, while in hostile waters is simply what submarines have always done and hopefully will always do in the future.

Connecting those dots, how Silversides, Drum and Tang, operated in WWII bears careful consideration by all professional submariners today. Perhaps such discussions can be included in a sequel to this excellent book by an author that surely knows how to do research and write as well.

One look at the phenomenal James Hornfischer's strong endorsement of this book and there was no stopping me getting a copy as soon as possible. Five stars is only a nominal assessment in this case, as Mr. Scott's book is better than that. Painstakingly researched and elegantly written, "The War Below" is a must read for WWII and history buffs but I hope it reaches a far broader audience. Americans should know this story well, for without the nearly unimaginable courage and skills displayed under the most stressful if not horrific conditions imaginable by our submariners in WWII, we would not know and enjoy our world today in its present form. Were it not for the inclusion of only one high level map of the Pacific (several more would have been helpful) and the too small (for me, at least) font, this might be a perfect book. The patrol sequences, frequently ending in the fiery and acrid destruction of enemy shipping and warships, are not merely thrilling but highly educational. One learns time and again of duty fulfilled that in fact went well beyond the call of duty. The recounting of a pharmacist's mate performing an emergency appendectomy while the skipper held the boat deep enough to minimize turbulence is simply beyond the pale. Get this book and devour it. And if you can get to the end-- right through the passages about our men being tortured in captivity-- without being emotionally overcome then perhaps you should make an appointment with the Wizard of Oz to see if you can be granted a heart. Six stars.
