Fascinating book about the behind-the-scenes workings of the modeling industry ...

Fascinating book about the behind-the-scenes workings of the modeling industry. In college, I briefly dabbled in modeling, though more of the 'commercial' and 'promo' type than the high fashion that Mears' work sought to investigate. I found her very candid accounts and quotes from insiders to be unfiltered and honest, though confirming my own observations that as a model, one is really commoditized and reduced to her (or his) parts. In terms of the distinction between 'editorial' and 'commercial' models, I think her explanation and comparisons of the dichotomy between the two worlds was very thorough...the trade-off between prestige and financial security is a common theme, not only in the modeling world, but throughout many other industries as well. When asking various people in the fashion industry about the lack of diversity (both in terms of racial and size), Mears received a myriad of comments echoing that the lack of diversity was caused by inadequate supply of models (per designers and photographers), inadequate demand for certain types of models (from bookers). It is no wonder that diversity is still difficult to come by when viewing images in Vogue, or catwalk stills on a website. However, I do think the situation is changing; Mears' book came just a few years too early to catch the social-media wave which propelled more diverse models such as Ashley Graham and Barbie Ferreira to fame. There is still a long way to go, and Mears' book confronts an uncomfortable topic head-on.

A well-thought out and very interesting analysis of the Modeling industry, with applications to Entertainment in general. Provides some glimpses into "behind the scene" but the approach is that of a dissertation. I feel those looking for an intellectual look at how beauty is monetized will be pleased. Those looking for a light "day in life of fashion model" will be disappointed.

Equality is a universal concern, but research has mostly focused on the dispossessed and marginal groups, now we have access to the top of the pyramid in a lucid academically sound analysis. Commodified women, the luxury fashion industry and its complex ecology. Highly recommended.

It will interest people who love puzzles, math, games, and just to be challenged. Stories of the author’s family are interwoven with the card play examples, giving insight into the tumultuous times in Europe of the 1920s to 1940s. Highly recommended!

This is the first book worldwide that systematically discusses strategies for
successful play of Schnapsen. No prior knowledge of the game is necessary to
read the book. Using examples from real game situations, there is discussion of
different aspects of the strategy, from basic techniques such as trump control
in the endgame to throw-in, expected gain, and discarding valuable cards to
deceive the opponent. The final chapter contains examples from all the
previously discussed areas of strategy, embedded in stories from the family
history of the author's father from the interwar period to emigration during
the Second World War. The detailed and thorough analyses will definitely help

William Bratton is Nicholas F. Gallicchio Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Institute for Law & Economics at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He is recognized internationally as a leading writer on business law. He brings an interdisciplinary perspective to a wide range of subject matters that encompass corporate governance, corporate finance, accounting, corporate legal history, and comparative corporate law. His work has appeared in the California, Cornell, Michigan, Northwestern, Pennsylvania, Southern California, Stanford, and Virginia law reviews, and the Duke and Georgetown law journals amoung others. His book, Corporate Finance: Cases and Materials (Foundation Press, 7th ed. 2012), is the leading law school text on the subject. Bratton is a Research Associate of the European Corporate Governance Institute. In 2009, he was installed as the Anton Philips Professor at the Faculty of Law of Tilburg University, the fifth American academic to hold the chair.

Joseph A. McCahery is Professor of International Economic Law at TILEC and Tilburg University School of Law. He is Program Director of the Finance and Law programs at Duisenberg school of finance. Previously, he held the Goldschmidt Visiting Chair of Corporate Governance at the Solvay Business School of the University of Brussels and Chair in Corporate Governance and Innovation at the University of Amsterdam Faculty of Business and Economics. He has contributed to the literature on banking and securities law, corporate law, corporate governance, the political economy of federalism, and taxation and has published in a wide range of top academic journals. I'll never stop reading this book. It has become a joy forever.

This is my favorite book, I've also read it many many times. This story never gets old. It is hilarious! The characters are ALL lovable (well except the rat from Rome) and relatable. I think that's what makes it so funny. The characters are extremely well developed and the dialogue is brilliant. The story is so well written that you become a part of the world that is The Monastery of Cana.

About the Author

Steven P. Lab is Professor of Criminal Justice and Chair of the Department of Human Services. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminology from the Florida State University School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Dr. Lab is the author or coauthor of five books, the editor/coeditor of two readers, and coeditor of one encyclopedia. He is the author of more than 50 articles or book chapters and has presented more than 70 papers to academic or professional societies. He is a past editor of the Journal of Crime and Justice and has been an assistant editor or on the editorial boards of several additional journals. Dr. Lab has been a visiting professor at the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science of the University College London and at Keele University in Staffordshire, England, as well as a Visiting Fellow at Loughborough University (England) and a Research Consultant with the Perpetuity Research Group at Leicester University (England). Dr. Lab has received grant funding for several large research projects from the National Institute of Justice, and has served as a consultant to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Arizona Governor’s Office, and various offices of the U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. Lab is also a past-president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
