We call such music xentonal.

Good Work

The other review is over-enthusiastic. Hardly an example of unbiased scientific inquiry, the author basically sets out to prove something and does so without searching for contradictory evidence. As a result, we get a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Very interesting, never-the-less.
Reader's should be warned that this is *not* an introductory text, and that it is not an overview of the area of tunings.
Additionally, it is interesting that the word 'timbre' is in the title, as there is not one iota of original perceptual research here...and timbre is a preceptual phenomenon.

An interesting combination of mathematics and psychoacoustics

The author, while experimenting with a synthesizer, discovered that some kinds of scales sound good with some timbres and not with others, and likewise some kinds of timbres sound good in some scales and not in others. He set out to find out why, and the result was this book. The book examines these types of questions by looking at psychoacoustics and produces a model of musical perception that can predict what you will hear when you put certain timbres in specific musical contexts. The first few chapters examine the issues of tuning, timbre, spectrum, and scale in nonmathematical terms. Only in later chapters does the author introduce the math behind the modeling. A CD accompanies the book that allows you to listen to the sounds and the various tunings recommended in the book and verify that the model works correctly. This book is a good companion to Perry Cook's more basic book on psychoacoustics entitled "Music, Cognition, and Computerized Sound", which is a much less mathematical work. I enjoyed this book because I'm interested in multimedia computing and I'm always looking for texts that explore the relationship between images, sound, and mathematics. You'll need to be familiar with music theory before you tackle this book, since the author makes some assumptions there about his audience. However, he is fairly gentle with the mathematical portion.

A Landmark Book in the History of Musical Sounds

While experimenting with musical instruments and sounds, the author observed a new relationship between the timbre of sounds and the tunings in which sounds are played. In an effort to understand this relationship the author hypothesized a mechanism for relating spectrum to scale. He then went to the heart of the matter, figured it all out, and proved the hypothesis. All of this and much more are clearly presented in Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale (TTSS).
TTSS is written so as to be comprehensible to a wide readership. It was a pleasure reading this informative and stunning book. In places it is even entertaining as the author's sense of humor shows through. The book should eventually find its way into many libraries (public, private, and institutional) because it contains new and important original contributions to many areas of music.
There are 345 pages divided into 13 sections and 6 short appendices. There is an extensive bibliography, a discography, an index, and an accompanying Compact Disk containing 33 sound examples. All sound examples are explained in the book, and they provide convincing support for the author's premises.

A succinctly written Prelude tells what Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale is all about. I found myself looking forward to learning more about the ideas outlined here. You'll find yourself anxious to learn where a particular concept will lead. The author has a knack for gradually building up an idea to its climax while keeping the reader involved, and this is rare amongst books where new ideas are being presented.

The book begins, in Section 1, with a challenge to current thinking concerning the consonance of musical octaves. A new idea is presented and its validity demonstrated using audio examples on the accompanying CD. ... Superb demonstration!... Section 1 also introduces a unique and practical method of quantifying the tonal consonance of any musical sound. The next four sections are entitled respectively: The Science of Sound, Musical Scales, Consonance and Dissonance of Harmonic Sounds, and Related Spectra and Scales. These sections taught me much about musical sounds and concepts. They are well written and include many informative figures, and they provide descriptions of more unique audio examples on the CD.

The Science of Sound section addresses the issue: what is sound? This leads into clear discussions of relevant terms. The reader is taken on a fascinating journey into timbre, pitch, scales, tunings, spectral analysis, beats and consonance. After reading about Musical Scales, you'll feel like an expert, and gain an appreciation of scales since the time of Pythagoras. You'll understand the profound influence they have had over the centuries in defining musics of an era.

The next section on Consonance and Dissonance provides a historical perspective of the way in which these terms have been used, and then focuses on Sensory Consonance. This has the unique property, amongst consonance/dissonance concepts, of being quantifiable in a scientific sense. It is here that one discovers a fundamental connection between the consonance works of Helmholtz 1877, Plomp & Levett 1965 and Partch 1974, which leads to a reasonably complete understanding of sensory consonance. The plot thickens as the connection between sensory consonance and musical scales unfolds. This connection is then transformed into practice as the author creates new and unique songs, A Bell, A Rock and A Crystal. It is amazing to observe musical passages created in this way.

The following section, Adaptive Tunings, describes the author's algorithms for tuning in real time, or , as is sometimes described, how to "tune on the fly". Once again, the accompanying CD provides adaptively tuned musical passages verifying algorithmic predictions. It seems that music is about to expand its domain of musical sounds in a significant way. Read the book to find out why and how this is happening.

The book contains much, much more. There is a section on Gamelans, a theory for 10 TET, dissonance curve computer programs, sensory consonance score of a Scarlatti sonata, analysis and synthesis of harmonic and non-harmonic sounds. Fourier Transform analysis and limitations, dissonance surfaces for chords, and a well thought out final section: Speculation, Interpretation, Conclusion.

I believe the author also recognized a basic limitation of Western music, and again went to the heart of the problem, figured it all out, and then proved his point. The result of these efforts is this exceptional book.

Small Data – not a small revolution but a BIG revolution

I cannot tell you how releaved I was when I first heard about Small Data. The number of meetings I’ve attended – the number of conferences I’ve attended all babbling about BIG data – and how wonderful it is – has for some time been like the empires new clothes story. Everyone talked about it, everyone wanted it but no-one has really a clue about what it is and most importantly how to use it.
What I love about Small Data is, beside that the book is extremely well written, that it really makes a very compelling case for the very concept of Small Data. It is a pageturner that’s for sure – which I guess is rare for a book covering what one would think a dry topic like that. But more than that – the book is so convincing, so concise and simple that you end concluding – how obvious – why didn’t I think about it – in fact why is the world so wrong and this book so right.
I noticed that on the authors site he positioned this as a “small” revolution – playing on the word small – I think he’s wrong. Small Data is a BIG revolution, companies after reading this book will without any doubt completely change their mind about the millions of data they obtain and how they see the future. Hopefully we’ll soon see a lot of Small Data Departments around. Needless to say – this is not only an enjoyable and thought provoking book – it is a book everyone in business have to read.

Rabbit Trails

I really enjoyed Buyology but Small Data was just okay. Martin shares some interesting insights into people and their habits but sometimes digressed so much I had to shake my head and remind myself what his original point was or what he was tying to support/prove. It reminded me of talking to a grandparent who feels the need to go off on rabbit trails and you just want them to get to the point.

This book is theory and predictions applied in the real world - very refreshing

I’m a huge fan of trends books and I’ve read them all (or almost). I heard about this book through my reader club - and couldn’t wait to read it. The subtitle “The Tiny Clues That Uncover Huge Trends” just caught my attention. When I’m this excited to read a book it rarely delivers - this book did from the very first page where Martin talks about the Lego story. It is such an amazing insight about how my favorite toy brand avoided bankruptcy by picking up on a trend no-one saw, to become the worlds number 1. What I like about this trend book compared with almost every other book I’ve read in this category is that Martin is real - I mean he doesn't just sit there and write about the future - he’s adapting his trend observations to the real world - and as a result time after time turn around brands out there. He talks about how a supermarket chain in the U.S. (Lowes Foods) was completely turned around based on some fascinating trend observations he made while staying in consumers homes in North Carolina, how he picked up on how girls were using facial powder in Switzerland and as a result helped a fashion chain there to increase sales, or my beloved Roomba recovered its sound (I've always been puzzled why those cute navigation sounds suddenly seemed to have disappeared in the latest model I bought some years go). He convinced Roomba to re-introduce these based on trend observations - and people loved it.

It was very good. This is a story I can get behind. It leaves enough unanswered about the protagonists backstory that it makes me want the next volume to find out more. I have already watched the anime, but a few of the terminology was very difficult to follow without more in depth exposition which the light novel gives and had enough extra that I'm not bored going over things I've already watched. I would recommend this to both people who have watched the anime and newcomers to the series.

If you have found this book and are thinking about purchasing, you may have a child like mine. If so, I am writing this review to you - other parents go elsewhere! lol - I think this book is going to save my son's life. He sits for HOURS to do five minutes, and I do mean five minutes worth of homework. It makes me BAT CRAP crazy!! Like Home Simpson choking Bart crazy. This is part II of what is going to save his life this year at school. There is really great advice in each chapter. And here is where it gets hard for you parents - YOU HAVE TO READ, highlight, take notes and THINK about how you are going to CONSISTENTLY apply what SOAR is telling you. I set time aside to go through one chapter at a time - perfectly easy and do-able. I read through the book twice. And now I am going to have my son read through the relevant parts that I think will help him. (He's ten going into 5th grade - already at a disadvantage because of his VERY young age - I know, I know.)

Part I that will save your child's life is to pick up John Rosemand's book on Homework - you can find it here - "Ending the Homework Hassle" or something close to that. BAM! This book will give you the swift and sturdy kick in YOU THE PARENT'S butt. Couple it with the suggestions in the SOAR book and life will beging to come together for your family. John Rosemand will give you the courage to let your kid fail BIG and the SOAR book will give you the tools to teach your child how to remedy his (or her) big failure at school.

Just Good Stuff!

Purchased this for my 14-year old as she enters high school. Hoping to help her identify study/comprehension skills that will be great tools to use in her high school career. She is doing the exercises and reading it without any direction from me! She even presented me with one of the challenges on observation. This has been a plus for her summertime reading. Hopefully it will help her in this next chapter.

I would recommend this book to parents looking to give their kids the tools to be successful.

My Review:
Warning: this review has a slight spoiler. It's something which is revealed fairly early in the story, but don't read any further if you want everything in the book to be a surprise. An overview of the review...I enjoyed the book and recommend.

Aw, I really loved this 1Night Stand story. The best thing about it is that the two men have a history. Drew has wanted to sub for Holt for almost a year. In the meantime, he's not been able to have sex with anyone else. He doesn't desire anyone else. He's getting a bit desperate and has finally given up. He finally accepts that it's never going to happen with Holt so he contacts Madame Eve, hoping that a 1NS will help him get over his obsession. So you can imagine his surprise...and yes, anger....when his 1NS turns out to be Holt.

I loved the set-up for this story. Drew has been burying who he really is to be the perfect sub for Holt, which is NOT what Holt truly wants. It turns out to be such a great story about the importance of being true to yourself before you can be something more to someone else. I loved Drew's bit of rebellion and bratiness. He truly wants Holt, but has finally hit the point where's he's had enough. He's not going to hold back anymore....nothing like a sub is supposed to act. But it shows that this is a guy who is his own person, too. It made him so much more attractive and a great character to read about.

The other side of that is Holt. I loved how quickly it becomes apparent about what he really wants. Yes, he wants a sub, but not an automotron. He wants a sub who's also strong and capable. So attractive.

This book was easy to love. It has a wonderful style to it. I really enjoyed both characters although we definitely get to know Drew better because the whole story is told from his POV. I liked the depth to the story. There is a lot of history woven into it to give a lot to this very short story. It was GOOD!

I just finish this one and i must say it was great! it's HOT. A dom with feelings, the sub was a little too weepy at times. I can't give it 5* only because I wanted more. Wish I had more and viewed it from both sides. I can't wait to see more from this Author 4.5

This short has a lot of great things going for it... strong male characters who push for what they want, rich emotional depth with layers of history to help sell it, and an intense BDSM experience that is neither too technical and obtuse nor too flowery or feminine or over-the-top. I also loved that the story doesn't end with the morning after and gives the reader a satisfying epilogue that makes you want to keep reading about these guys in their own series. Excellent short read and totally worth the investment (money, time, and emotion!). Loved it! Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys male/male bdsm erotica with the Master/sub dynamic.

I'd read this BEFORE SM-101, it's just plain for fun

Written from a "Professional Submissives" point of view (I didn't even know there was such a thing) it is a great survey of all the stuff you might run into. Plenty of personal experiences to help illustrate and not a "downer". Short, easy to read and a good primer before trying to tackle the subject with any real conviction. Just getting started? By all means YES!
