About the Author

Scott Freeman

Scott Freeman received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. His current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning and he recently published two papers on his work: (1) how active learning and peer teaching techniques increase student learning and improve performance in introductory biology (Freeman, S., E. O’Connor, J.W. Parks, M. Cunningham, D. Hurley, D. Haak, C. Dirks, and M.P. Wenderoth. 2007. Prescribed active learning increases performance in introductory biology. CBE–Life Sciences Education 6: 132-139.); and (2) how the levels of exam questions vary among introductory biology courses, standardized post-graduate entrance exams, and professional school courses (Zheng, A.Y., J.K. Lawhorn, T. Lumley, and S. Freeman. 2007. Applications of Bloom’s Taxonomy Debunks the “MCAT Myth.” Science 25 January 2008: 414-415).

Kim Quillin

Illustrator, Kim Quillin, combines expertise in biology and information design to create lucid visual representations of biological principles. She received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley (as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow), and has taught undergraduate biology at both schools. Students and instructors alike have praised Kim’s illustration programs for Biological Science, as well as Biology: A Guide to the Natural World, by David Krogh, and Biology: Science for Life, by Colleen Belk and Virginia Borden, for their success at the visual communication of biology. Excellent Book (but don't buy the accompanying study guide)

I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology.

The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book.

One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

Used it for Introductory Biology - UW Seattle

Great book. Really enjoyed it. For a science textbook, it's not that "word-y." I actually had the Professor who is the author, and how he teaches is kind of like what this book does: it seeks to clarify, not muddle; brevity and concise for maximum understanding. Also has great illustrations. I wouldn't completely rely on only this textbook to learn everything about Biology, but this is a great start.

Also for future UW students: No, I did not have to buy MasteringBiology. That was completely optional. Clickers were more important than MasteringBiology. MasteringBiology is not Alex/Connect Plus.

I love this text!

I've only been using this book for 2 weeks and I already enjoy it, which is a big thing to say for a textbook. The last general bio book I had was full of information that drowned out the overall point each section within the chapter was trying to bring. It was full of biochem and technical talk that wasn't needed for this level of class.

Freeman's book brings a refreshing approach to writing about biology. Each chapter and section within each chapter, provides the student with the "meat and bones" of what they need to know. It's not hard to comprehend the take home message and to see how each little component adds up to make a larger component. This book has made me love biology again and understand why I returned to school. Good job Scott Freeman!

Christopher Isherwood was a diverse writer whose accomplishments included The Mortmere Stories (Edward Upward Series), A Single Man and a translation of The Song of God (Bhagavad Gita). But many critics hailed The Berlin Stories, the reissue of two of his best novels, as his finest. In the book, a man named Christopher Isherwood, who is and is not the author, writes a story of exile, combining the best of Isherwood's real life with the best of the life he imagined.

Collection of two previously published novels written by Christopher Isherwood, published in 1946. Set in pre-World War II Germany, the semiautobiographical work consists of Mr. Norris Changes Trains (1935; U.S. title, The Last of Mr. Norris) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939). The Berlin Stories merge fact and fiction and contain ostensibly objective, frequently comic tales of marginal characters who live shabby and tenuous existences as expatriates in Berlin; the threat of the political horrors to come serves as subtext. In Goodbye to Berlin the character Isherwood uses the phrase "I am a camera with its shutter open" to claim that he is simply a passive recorder of events. The two novels that comprise The Berlin Stories made Isherwood's literary reputation; they later became the basis for the play I Am a Camera (1951; film, 1955) and the musical Cabaret (1966; film, 1972). -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

Corresponds well with the history of Berlin. the moods reflect the era of rebuilding after WWII and describe the environment which
allowed Hitler to gain control and offer Germany a chance to regain power and rebuild after the Treaty of Versailles.

A Great Book

Berlin Stories is a wonderful book. I am reading it again it's so good!!!!!!! The writing is absolutely impeccable. Though I read it because of my obsession with the musical "Cabaret", I found it to be a great book in its own right. I think Isherwood would be proud of the current Broadway version of "Cabaret". I don't know what else to say:)

Brain Food At a Modest Price for Exceptional Value

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes which comprise the "Harvard Business Review Paperback Series." Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking on the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: [...] The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarding experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section which usually includes suggestions of other sources which some readers may wish to explore.

In this volume, there are eight in-depth interviews of current or former CEOs: Jacques Nasser (Ford Motor Company) on "Driving Change"; Roger Sant and Dennis Bakke (AES) on "Organizing for Empowerment"; John Browne (British Petroleum) on "Unleashing the Power of Learning"; Michael Dell (Dell Computer) on "The Power of Virtual Integration"; Sir Colin Marshall (British Airways) on "Competing on Customer Service"; John Sawhill (the Nature Conservatory) on "Surviving Success"; Krister Ahlstrom (The Ahlstrom Corporation) on "Governing the Family-Owned Enterprise"; and Michael Eisner (The Walt Disney Company) on "Common Sense and Conflict."

No brief commentary such as this can do full justice to the rigor and substance of the interviews provided. It remains for each reader to examine the list to identify those subjects which are of greatest interest to her or him. My own opinion is that all of the interviews are first-rate. For me, one of this volume's greatest benefits is derived from following the thought processes of each interviewee. Although no doubt edited to some extent, the responses never seem "canned." Having observed most of these executives in person or being interviewed on television, I can attest to the natural flow of the conversations. This is how the subjects think. This is how they express themselves. It should be noted that the interviews are conducted by Suzy Wetlaufer, Steven E. Prokesch, Alice Howard or Joan Magretta. (The interview of Sawhill was co-conducted by Howard and Magretta.) Even those who already subscribe to the Harvard Business Review will greatly appreciate this series because each volume gathers together separate but related articles (previously published in the HBR) on the same general subject. The cost of each volume in the series is relatively modest; the value provided is substantial.
