Professional or not...

I was assigned this book for my Sociology 104 class at KU. Out of the five books we were expected to read, this book was definitely top 3 (with Connected and Sidewalk, thought the other two - The Tender Cut & The Second Shift - were also eye-opening as well). Though I still have trouble with remembering what terms belong to what principles, like hegemony, my understanding of what was taught in the class was paralleled. This book is an eye opener and you don't need to understand what all of the terms mean to get a feel for the point being made here. Yes, there are a couple of chapters that express the meaning of this study in terms that are difficult to take on, especially if you are not expecting to or interested in studying sociology beyond the basics or have studied, but don't let that affect your decision when ascertaining the truth. This book is amazing and nearly riveting. I did understand the professional terms, for the most part, while I read this book (since I was knee deep in the class at the time and soaking up as much 'goody' as possible) and I would just like to say that it is worth your time.

This book focuses on a group of homeless heroine addicts (though many smoke crack and drink as well). This study/story shows a parallel of survival and social structure similar to that of 'normal' life, but, of course, with a bias of illegal dependency and the carelessness for others; the root of the human soul in some (maybe many) cases. Through a constant circus ride of highs and lows, this group of lost individuals will tear your heart out as they make blind, selfish choices, cleanse themselves of addiction and fall back into the arms of homeless hopelessness, scavenge for opportunities to make good to fix, and many other awful reasons that will hopefully deter any sane member of the human race from ever touching a drug that has been repeatedly proven as B.A.D. since 1918 (after its discovery in 1889... hm). That was a long sentence. :/

A Wealth of Theory and Praxis in Medical Anthropology

Philippe Bourgois and Jeff Schonberg spent over twelve years in the field becoming intimately knowledgeable with the day to day lives and problems of homeless heroin addicts in this priceless ethnography. This work gives a real life look at complex social theories like biopower, habitus and symbolic violence that allows insights beyond what a student can glean from reading the works of Foucault and Bourdieu. As an added bonus, the publisher has allowed a kindle version making Righteous Dopefiend easily accessible wherever you are with great features like text-to-speech. I would still recommend picking-up a hard copy in addition to your kindle version Schonberg's striking photography which really brings the characters from along the Edgewater Boulevard to life and enriches the text.

Ethnography that's Readable

Well written and engrossing. Considering using this for a coming Anthropology course. Easy to read and interesting. The ethnographic work is set in theory quite well, with the theory being easily understood. Often ethnographies get so highfalutin that even seasoned anthropologists struggle through. This is approachable.

In terms of the approach, I like the photographic component and the fact that the authors address the possibility of various misreadings/misuses of photographs in ethnographic works.

Brilliant introduction to Chinese History

This is a truly helpful and stimulating introduction to Chinese History, an ideal companion volume to more structured, non-illustrated histories: clear, highly explanatory maps; excellent choice of images and visual documents that bring to life China's bygone ages. Although the book focusses on broad historical trends across China's pre-dynastic and imperial ages up to modern times, it also offers boxes that deal with iconic figures of their times and with cultural issues that defined each historic period. I use this book as one of my sources to teach a Chinese Cultural History course and it has never let me down. Its only weakness lies in the dearth of parallel text translations: unfortunately a very common feature of books dealing with Chinese culture, history, literature etc. written in the English language. Offering access to the original in Chinese can be a bonus, as some of the poems or documents quoted in English are not always to be found easily in Chinese over the net or elsewhere.
Still, a wonderful Chinese History book, highly recommended.

This is a good solid introductory history of China with much more well written text that I had expected. It covers the major facts very well. I would recommend for an introductory college course or anyone interested but unfamiliar with Chinese history. It contains many excellent and informative full color maps that I particularly appreciated. The many full color illustrations are clear and relevant to the text. It will remain in my Chinese history collection as an accessible reference. Garrison Moore

Concise and incisive: A highly readable summary

With more than a billion people and 5,000 years of history, it's not surprising that most books on the History of China cover a brief period in excruciating depth. Patricia Ebrey's book is a deliciously self-aware overview, that delivers just what it promises: It covers all the issues and the illustrations are carefully chosen to amplify the text (not just a bunch of photos bound in the middle of the book). The book is beautifully printed--in China, of course!
Ebrey gets across the important point that we look to China and want a simple, linear summary, when China is complex and decidedely non-linear. (The Cultural Revolution as much happened to Mao as it was caused by him, for example). Moreover, she explains how our Western world view needs to see certain things (we always want the good guys to win in the end--perhaps they won't). This book would be great for a student at any level from High School library on to college. It could be used as a text and I'm also recommending it to US business people working with China. It's a wonderful introduction to the culture. The only quibble is that the Anglo pronunciation of pinyin isn't explained with a reference (for example, Qing Dynasty is pronounced "Ching" but you can't find that here). The pricing is very attractive too.

am I glad I got THIS one

Wow! There is another higher profile, and much more expensive Bonestell book on Amazon which I was considering buying. But boy, am I glad I got THIS one! Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the more recent Bonestell book is very good and perhaps larger in size...and if you're willing to part with $150 + bucks you'll probably see the higher quality.

But having bought this, what could I REALLY be missing? It was $35 bucks. The printing is excellent. There is what seems to be an extremely comprehensive sampling of his works, from his early architectural career to movie matte paintings to his famous Collier's stuff and rarely seen fantasy castle & unicorn type paintings. I feel like this book covers his career thoroughly, and almost every painting is in color, as opposed to the "Conquest of Space" book which unfortunately printed a lot in B&W. What a great value for my $35! Excellent.

Excellent representation of Bonstell's art

Chesley Bonestell was a talented artist. He produced important work for Colliers, Look and all the 1950's magazines, when the space race was just getting started. His illustrations of space stations, rockets and other planets inspired the early part of the space age and gave young people like myself something to dream about. This book shows some, but by no means all of his work relating to early speculation about flight to other worlds. If you're a Bonestell fan or just like to see excellent artwork, Worlds Beyond is a good place to start. If you like this sort of thing, buy this book, it's by the Master of scientific illustration. There's nobody better. I only give it four stars, because the book needs to include more.

The controversial work of the Jesus Seminar and its efforts to discover (or uncover) the "real" Jesus, the recent spate of books that include "the complete" sayings of Jesus; the ongoing efforts of theologians like John Shelby Spong to redefine the meaning of Christ for a new millennium: these are just among the latest efforts in a quest going back three hundred years to define Jesus, the man.

There is a delightfully rich cast of characters in Charlotte Allen's book The Human Christ: The Search for the Historical Jesus. Hermann Reimarus, father of German textual criticism of the Bible, who accused Jesus of deliberately deceiving his followers into thinking he was a miracle worker; Thomas Jefferson, who in 1804 decided to extract from the gospels what he considered the genuine sayings of Jesus (presaging the Jesus Seminar by some 190 years). Schweitzer, Hegel, Flaubert, Nietzsche, Scorsese--these figures and many others are shown searching for their historical Jesus, in a n informative, amiable style.

Allen argues that searchers for the "real" Jesus found what they wanted to find: liberals found a liberal Jesus; mystics a gnostic Jesus. Not surprisingly, Allen also details the passing fads over the 300-year search for the "real" Jesus--and how Jesus research usually spoke more directly to the present than the past.

If readers are interested in the ongoing premillennial controversy about Jesus the man--what he said; what he did, what it meant, and what it means--Allen's book is recommended reading. Allen's wide-ranging survey analyzes the quest for the historical Jesus.The historical Jesus has occupied French theologian Ernest Renan, German theologians like D.F. Strauss, Rudolf Bultmann and Helmut Koester, British novelists like George Eliot and American New Testament scholars like Robert Funk and the Jesus Seminar. In a breezy journalistic style, Lingua Franca contributing editor Allen blows through the last three centuries of historical Jesus scholarship to render the oft-quoted moral of the story: the Jesus-searchers of every era have found their own worldviews reflected comfortably in their portraits of Jesus. Allen opens her survey of these Jesus quests with an exploration of Jesus' Jewish world and the reception of Christianity in the Hellenic world. She then proceeds to explore the cultural contexts, from the 17th century to the 20th, in which the various Jesus quests arose. For example, in her examination of the work of the Jesus Seminar, she argues that "the non-eschatological Jesus of the New Quest is a congenial figure for many American academics who associate eschatology with snake-handling and polyester blends, or who fear that putting apocalyptic sayings into Jesus' mouth supports the political goals of the Christian coalition." In her zeal to vilify the New Quest, however, she makes insupportable generalizations such as the contention that the Jesus Seminar "implicitly claims to represent a consensus of current New Testament scholarship," a claim never made explicitly or implicitly by Funk and company. In the end, Allen prefers her Jesus as a Jew who is the divinized Christ of Catholic Christian orthodoxy. While the book might be helpful to some readers as an introduction to the quest for the historical Jesus, its superficial scholarship makes this a less than worthwhile contribution to the historical Jesus conversation.

A LAY CATHOLIC WRITER SUMMARIZES "JESUS RESEARCH" FROM 18TH CENTURY TO NOW

Charlotte Allen is a freelance writer and contributing editor at Lingua Franca. She wrote in the Introduction to this 1998 book, "I am not a biblical scholar, and this book is not an attempt to offer a theory of who the historical Jesus was, or whether he actually said or did those things attributed to him in the Gospels. Rather, it examines the way in which the image of Jesus has functioned as a vehicle for some of the best and worst ideas of Western civilization over the past 2,000 years." (Pg. 6) She adds, "The quest for the historical Jesus has produced surprisingly little genuine and uncontroverted new knowledge over the past three centuries about the man and his time... Despite these considerations, I do not believe that the search for the historical Jesus has been in vain. Indeed, it has come full circle in recognizing and exploring Jesus' Jewishness." (Pg. 6-7)

She admits, "One final word: As a Catholic, I am certain that my own theological presuppositions have colored my presentations of the people I have surveyed, just as their theological and ideological presuppositions have colored their presentations of Jesus... I have tried to write about the subjects of this text at least partly from their own point of view, with sympathy as well as critical detachment." (Pg. 7)

She observes, "The [18th-19th century] German Jesus-searchers in fact tended to INVENT biblical history... Partly because they were Protestants (most Catholics were disinclined to partipate in the quest for the historical Jesus, and the writings of Kant and his followers were on the Vatican's Index of Forbidden Books), and partly because they were rationalists, the German biblical scholars propounded various theories that incorporated their Protestant/rationalist/progressivist reading of history." (Pg. 124)

She suggests, [David Friedrich] Strauss [The Life of Jesus Critically Examined] was not an innovator like [Ferdinand Christian] Baur, who had begun his own Hegelian odyssey while Strauss was working on his 'Life.' In fact, Strass's comprehensive theories about the mythological nature of the Gospel stories are easily traceable to the ideas of Eichhorn, Gabler, Herder, Georg Lorenz Bauer, de Wette, and even Baur himself." (Pg. 152)

This book will be of most interest to Christians---particularly Catholics---looking for a historical summary of the historical research of the past three centuries.

Learned and Gripping

This is a rare treat. Allen combines scholarship, an excellent writing style, deep cultural insight, and fearlessnes to come to terms with the way Jesus has been understood in a huge variety of social contexts through time. Her survey of intellectual history, which debunks the debunkers from the Apostolic age to our own, has predictably raised the hackles of many. Why? Her final message urges intellectual humility, a trait not often found among those who tackle this huge subject. Few have done it so successfully.

Great step by step review of thought concerning who Jesus really was. Lofty thoughts of two thousand years of genius and creativity are made simple and discussed in a straight forward style. Ms. Allen always writes in layman's language but never in a condescending fassion. A wonderful addition to any Jesus library. A reference book that can be read like a novel. Well done.

Q: Why do you describe Eat Move Sleep as a "project"?

A. The book Eat Move Sleep is just one part of my overall mission. My team and I also put a lot of time into the website, personalized 30 day plan, reference explorer, and guides for people to use in groups. Our goal is simply to get people talking about how we can all have better days and live longer as a result.

Q: What is the most important thing you learned from this research?

A. The fact these three elements - eating, moving, and sleeping - build on one another. As a result, working on all three at once is even easier than focusing on one area in isolation. I structured the book to help people work on these elements in combination.
Q: What was your greatest challenge in working on this book?

A. My biggest challenge was narrowing down to the most practical findings, given the wealth of good science. Even though some of the findings may seem like common sense, the key is connecting short-term incentives with what's best for your long-term health.

Exactly what I needed to read.

I remember hearing an NPR report one day that your morning workout was almost totally diminished by the fact that you (me) sit all day long. I remember kind of panicking about that and I thought of it often. And then I read this book and that is one of the central points - YOU ARE MEANT TO MOVE. One of the gigantic take-aways I got from this is that I NEED a desk around my treadmill. The author, Tom Rath, deals with a very rare genetic condition and he utilizes many basic "tricks" to engineer his environment - walking at 1.5 mph all day long is one of them. Okay, so I thought HOW do you read and walk on a treadmill?? Well, at 1.5 and even up to about 2 mph I can do that! Who knew!! Another fast take away I got from the book was the 20/2 rule. Again, deals with sitting at a corporate desk all day long - so if this does not apply to you - you're a bit luckier. Set a timer for 20 minutes and get up for 2 minutes. I modified this - 30/3. And let me tell you - the difference is thousands of steps (I wear a fitbit) a day. It is unbelievable. Now I am going to disclose entirely TMI - there have been days where I have sat soooo long in front of my monitors my butt goes numb and then hurts!! NO MORE! Now knowing exactly what damage I am doing by allowing myself to do this, all in the name of working ushered a change in my behavior - SO SIMPLE TO DO! I am up and walking a lap or two around my floor every 30 minutes. Okay, this is getting way too long - and you have to read the book because there is so much to apply - but Tom hammers on the importance of sleep - again - GUILTY - I regularly go 6 hours sometimes 3 hours (tracking everything with fitbit) - and you need 8++ hours to get the body repairing itself. That is going to be my new goal to work on. One fast read - TONS to apply - you will not be disappointed with this book. It is so darn practical and doable. Get it today, apply it tomorrow.

Nothing New

There is nothing in this book that anyone who reads about health or dieting has not already read. He had a concept for a book and tried to flesh it out with a lot of repeated stuff...literally...he repeats the same stuff in several chapters trying to make the book longer. He could have done a quick bullet point list and it would tell you everything (you already know). It's pretty basic...This research says this and that experiment says that...etc. That said: I gave it 2 stars because if you are new to diet and health and want to see some research to back it up, it has "some" of it in one book (however it seems that for every piece of research quoted there is a contradictory research done), but he has some pretty solid info here for the novice. It comes down to eat healthy (if you don't know what that is this would be a good book for you)...mostly plants/ Move daily / Sleep 8-10 hours a night.

About the Author
Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Sandy received her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois.

Judi A. Peman has a B.A. in Spanish Education and an M.A. in Linguistics, both from the University of Illinois. She has taught ESL to both high school students and adults for over 30 years. Currently, she is a teacher emeritus at Truman Community College in Chicago. Judi has presented workshops in basic reading and writing at various professional conferences. She has also taught and trained teachers in both Spain and China. Judi is the author/co-author of 3 ESL text books.

Solid, Engaging and Affordable

This is the long-standing standby series for grammar courses in our community college ESL program. I have experimented with other texts over the years, but I keep coming back to Elbaum because:

a) Most of the reading and writing contexts are relevant and engaging for my students.
b) Since the series is so widely used, they have many options for obtaining it inexpensively--online second-hand sales, rentals, or hand-me-down from friends and relatives. Since a majority of my students are low-income and textbook costs are an obstacle for them, this is an important consideration.

The weak point of the book, from my perspective, is that some of the grammar points seem to be explained in convoluted and confusing ways when much simpler explanations exist. These include our residual uses of the subjunctive in English, the problem of -ing/-ed participle adjectives, and tricky things about adjective clauses that are governed by features of the embedded sentence. There are several places where I just have to tell the class, "Don't pay attention to that page in the book, I can explain it better."
