Risque Photo Book

Anyone who is a fan of Taschen's line of coffee table art books and Terry Richardson will enjoy this book.

Terry Richardson is one of the more risque and gritty fashion photographers of the last decade or so, with his signature glasses and plaid shirts, an this book is a fun, brief foray into some of his work. It is definitely risque, NOT safe for work or children - and some of the photos may be a bit uncomfortable for some readers / viewers.

But, this is a great volume to add to your Taschen series, or any photo book collection.

Color me unimpressed.

While I do think this book is a great deal at around $14, I found the content underwhelming. Imagine if a kind of slimy quasi-celeb in Hollywood had a series of drug/sex parties and someone walked around with a camera taking pics of the the men's equipment and caught a few couples doing sleazy stuff. Then various girls posed and showed their boobs, a few pornstars came by and blew some guys, and the host took more pics of his Johnson. Some of the guests clowned around with props and did silly stuff naked, all captured on film. Then you would have the pics in this book. The only thing I can say for Terry is that he's taken some of the best pics of Lindsay Lohan I've seen. But there is nothing approaching that quality in this book.

A step down from the 1st edition...

I've used this textbook in both the first and second edition, but have decided that I won't use it again.

I generally liked the first edition, but this second edition was inferior. First, the CD-ROM with the primary readings has been made more difficult to use. Many of the entries no longer open a text box on the screen but take you to a website with numerous options, making the precise reading assignments difficult to find unless you want to assign the whole text of something really long. Besides, if all these primary sources are already on the internet, why should we all pay extra to buy the CD-ROM?

Second, the book is organized in a confusing way. As someone who likes to teach the development of Western philosophy from Ancient Greece until today, there was no straightforward way to teach this. You have to jump around topic to topic. (OK, I acknowledge that some people like the topical approach so maybe this is just a personal perference)

Third, it is pretty obvious from reading the book which views the author prefers. I consider this to be inappropriate in an intro level book.

So, while there are some good things about the book such as its attempted breadth, I'll be using something else next time.

A Fun Read...

The 2nd Edition is riddled with typos, about one every two pages. This is annoying because they tend to appear right in a sentence where the author is driving home a point or asking a critical question.

Aside from that, it's a fun read, but some sections are far beyond the reading comprehension of beginning college students. At times, the author makes better sense of a long passage with his remarks and synthesis, while the context of the excerpts sometimes just do not come together.

I have to commend the author for picking some "choice" images for the margins to keep a sleepy reader alert. These include: the gradation of skin color changes over Michael Jackson's career span, death photos of Malcolm X, people picking through garbage, planes flying into the twin towers, etc.. I get the sense that the author is a cynical yet intelligent man, which is why the book works for me regardless of typos and small context issues.

Decent but not a great read

I read this for enjoyment, not for a class. I found the topics suited to an entry-level philosophy student, but for this purpose it does a good job of explaining the central viewpoints from which philosophers can approach a subject.

That said, these types of entry-level books are better when they include a chronological approach to philosophy. I saw jumps between topics and even within topics which seemed to ignore hundreds of years of thinking and debate.

As a cursory overview, this book delivers. As a middle-level book, the writing begins to falter. Seasoned philosophers will probably want to stay away from this one.

A good overview of a multidisciplinary theme.

This is a good text on compression techniques for video and audio signals for industry and academia alike. It serves as a good introduction to the signal processing aspects (without requiring a sophisticated mathematical background) and quickly delves into the practical aspects of implementation. It explains the hardware architectures, and software choices and tradeoffs that one would encounter in the implementation of video compression standards (MPEG 1,2, H.263 etc) and provides an introduction to audio standards like AC-3 and MPEG audio as well. The book also often lists important feature sets of current products in the market. The parts that I found most useful are the discussions (with block diagrams) of ICs and solutions from vendors like C-Cube and TI and the discussion on media processors like Trimedia, MPact etc. At the end of every chapter, resources for further probing are outlined for the interested reader.
This book is perhaps most useful to someone with some digital signal processing background, to get an overview of problems and approaches to image, audio and video compression in the industry.
The price is somewhat high, but the investment may be worth it for your company, or yourself!

After reading, and surprisingly enjoying, the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY trilogy, I decided to give Wild's series a chance. The HACKER series has gotten tons of press, and it didn't disappoint. In fact, I found the writing to be surprisingly well done. Much like FIFTY SHADES, I enjoyed this book because of the plot. What I like about Wild's series is that both main characters have secrets and an awful past. In FIFTY SHADES, I found Ana to be quite frustratingly annoying, and I often wondered if I would have been more interested had she been a more complex character. Erica and Blake tell a fantastic story. I will say, I was slightly disappointed when I began to read terms like "submissive" and "vanilla sex" and "bondage." I was really hoping this series wouldn't be just like FIFTY SHADES. Why are all erotic romances leaning toward BDSM relationships now?? With that being said, this book took BDSM extremely mildly. It was nothing like FIFTY SHADES, which I also found to be much more mild (BDSM-wise) than I originally thought it'd be. Still, the idea of a BDSM relationship is discussed. I'm not sure if it'll play out completely by the end of the series or if this is the extent Wild will go to (PLEASE be the latter...), but nonetheless, this was a good read.

Loved this story!!!

I had bought all the books in this series as soon as they came out but never got around to reading these books. I know I am way late to the party. Better late than never right?

Erica is a new Harvard graduate. She has started an internet fashion company. She is head strong and stubborn but this company is her baby. One of her teachers gets her an interview with company that funds start up companies.

Blake Logan works for the company that Erica is trying to get money from. Blake lets her now right away that he won't be the one who gives her money but he wants to know if she had a boyfriend.

They keep running into each other. Erica soon learns that Blake has been setting up these run ins. He sets out to find anything about her and get her to be with him. Will she give in even though she see him dating her as conflict of interest?

Blake doesn't give up easy when she tells him she can't see him. Blake is intensely protective of Erica. How will she handle that? She is used to having complete control in her life? Will his protectiveness drive her away? Will she learn to deal with it?

I have seen a lot of reviews that compare this book with Fifty Shades. There are a few things alike but I enjoyed this way better than Fifty Shades.

New Author and Solid Start to her writing career with Hardwired

Hardwired by Meredith Wild is a love a story and so much more. The book is told in first person by Erica Hathaway; she is a fresh graduate from Harvard University, entrepreneur of her own Internet start-up fashion site-the company that she has poured her life into imagining and creating out of nothing. The company is her passion. She is alone in the world except for her mom's best friend Maria and her two business partners, Allie and Sid.

Enter Blake Landon; he literally bumps into Erica, and the sensual sparks fly. Sexy and devilishly handsome, he is every woman's fantasy man. The bump is short and sweet, but it leaves Erica with fantasy material, as the girl has no time for a social life. Psst, he is a billionaire control freak but a likeable billionaire control freak. He is going to have problems with `all career' Erica and that is just how it is going to be. Her company is her single-minded focus, and she is a driven individual; she doesn't have time for a man. So begins the journey of Erica and Blake meeting.

What I like about this book is that the plot was multifaceted. First you had the story line of Erica and her partners trying to get capital to grow their business. Erica and her partners Sid and Allie are having growing pains. They are all newly graduated from Harvard and expected to make their lives in the big bad non-academic world of real life. Each of the partners aren't just cardboard cut out place holders in for the main romance plot. They are three-dimensional characters who have their own lives. Sid isn't as fleshed out as Allie, but I expect that to happen as the series progresses.

Then, of course, you have the love story between Blake and Erica. No, this isn't `I fall at your feet and worship you because you are a billionaire time' for Erica. This is `I fight tooth and nail to ignore the pull for the billionaire and stand up for myself time' for Erica. Hey, the girl is a scotch drinker, and I expected nothing less. If she would have drank one of those fruity drinks, then all bets were off. Now I just need to know her brand to know how committed I will be to Erica. Yes, I'm a Scotch snob. Sue Me.

Then there was a very interesting plot twist in the book revolving around Erica's past, and guess what? I am not going to spoil it for anyone. But boy, it is a big blow-up-the-book type twist. This was an enjoyable book with characters I can't wait to read more about, as there is a sequel coming entitled Hardpressed.

Another ho-hum effort

As a professional philosopher with nearly 30 years of teaching experience at the college level I have taught numerous sections of general and applied ethics. During that time I have used several different texts and have read or perused countless more. Texts in applied ethics are readily available. Every major textbook publisher seemingly offers several. In determining whether or not to consider a text for adoption, several criteria come into play:

1. Does the text cover the major topics in the area? The Mappes and Zembaty text does this. However, so do most other applied ethics texts. And some of them have done a better job of keeping up with the current "hot" topics as well as some of the more recent articles on these topics.

2. Does the selection of articles for anthologization display a balance, with both (and in some cases all) viewpoints being fairly represented? Here too the Mappes and Zembaty anthology does a pretty decent job, but so do a lot of other anthologies.

3. Are there issues that I as the instructor consider relevant but that are not covered by most applied ethics texts? Of course, each instructor will have to answer this for himself or herself, so one's opinion is going to be somewhat subjective. Mappes and Zembaty have chosen to play it safe on this one and contain little that cannot be found in other anthologies.

4. Are there helpful overviews of each topic written by the editors/authors of the text? Here is one area where the Mappes and Zembaty anthology does a better job than most. Each of the issues is preceded by an introduction of several pages in which the options are clearly spelled out.

5. Is the price right? Let's face it. Textbooks are far too expensive and we would all like them to be cheaper. A few have a cost that is reasonable. Some are sky-high. Here too the Mappes and Zembaty anthology falls somewhere in the middle. However, one can probably find as good if not better an anthology in applied ethics that retails new for $20 less.

All in all, this is a very middling text. Therefore, it's worth three stars.

An average applied ethics text
