In France in the 17th century, the brothers Antoine (c. 1598–1648), Louis (c. 1600/1605–1648), and Mathieu (1607–1677) Le Nain painted images of everyday life for which they became posthumously famous. They are celebrated for their depictions of middle-class leisure activities, and particularly for their representations of peasant families, who gaze out at the viewer. The uncompromising naturalism of these compositions, along with their oddly suspended action, imparts a sense of dignity to their subjects.

The App with This Book Blew Me Away!

Who knew you could have fun while reading about conflict?! I've read many books for couples and I can tell you this is one of the best. It's unique and SO applicable. Every chapter has several take-away gems that are fresh and unique. And it's built on solid research. The simple distinction between a good vs. bad fight is profound. But maybe the coolest part of this book is the app that comes with it. It blew me away. I wasn't expecting such a robust tool. It's every bit as impressive than the book. And it's FREE! I've never seen anything like it and the app makes putting the information into practice so much easier. Also, it allows you to have exactly what you need at your fingertips - precisely when you need it (when a conflict heats up). The relational payoff with the book/app combo is immediate.

I will use the book and the mobile app to launch several innovative small groups at our church. We currently use Les and Leslie's "Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts" for all our pre-marriage classes.

Amazing - Conflict not Combat

I can't imagine any couple that wouldn't benefit from this book. The Good Fight is grounded in research and unswervingly dedicated to practical application. It's fresh and innovative. The authors have a way with words and they also admit to their own conflicts and struggles. Their vulnerability, in fact, makes their principles all the more relevant and true. I especially appreciated the section on discovering your "Conflict Quotient." It's a real eye-opener. Same for identifying your personal "Fight Type." I recommend this book to every couple – whether you're just starting out or married for decades. It's easy to read and makes an immediate positive difference.

This book is a wonderful read and full of easy to do ideas that make a big impact in our relationships. The app is the perfect compliment to a book like this. Usually when we read something that has so many valuable concepts that we would benefit from in our lives, the hard part is remembering and implementing all of them. The app is a tool that makes it easy to make several of these ideas a part of our lives immediately. Usually we only have the capacity to pull one nugget out of a good read. Between the book and the app, now we can pull nugget after nugget after nugget and remember to use them.

David Knox (Chantilly, VA) is the Chief Engineer for Oracle's Information Assurance Center Oracle Corporation's Security Center of Excellence. Mr. Knox joined Oracle Corporation in June 1995. While at Oracle, Mr. Knox has worked on many security programs for the US Department of Defense, various Intelligence Agencies, Healthcare and Financial Services industries. His knowledge in computer security derives not only from working knowledge and experience with Oracle's security products and database security, but also his academic studies in the areas of multilevel security, cryptography, LDAP, and PKI. David earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.

totally nothing special

I've read a lot of the recent "big data is coming" type books. I have to as part of my job.

I would give this one the pass, definitely. Unacceptably large chunks of it are the bios of various big data visionaries, which are only minimally interesting. In the end I don't think the author has any insights that anybody else doesn't have.

Viktor Mayer-Sch�nberger's "Big Data" is a LOT better. It's the book this one wanted to be.

Excellently Told Back-Story of Big Data and Data Science. The People, Organizations and Approach That Will Transform the World

Steve Lohr, a New York Times columnist who specializes in Information Technology, excellently tells the back-story of Big Data and Data Science gives the motivation of the individuals and organizations that are leading the charge into these technologies and ways of thinking, and gives us the big picture of how the world will look after the fulfillment of Data Science's promise. Like his earlier work "Goto" where he gave the biographies and adventuress of the personalities and ways of thinking that led to the software revolution, he tells an engaging story while enabling us to understand the personalities and motivations of the men and women who make this technology possible.

Unlike another reviewer who seems to believe that the only important book about a new technology is a "how-to" guide; I strongly believe that a good understanding of the story of what the technology is; what it will do for us and the larger society, and who will make it happen (people and organizations), and some of the keys to success in exploiting the technology is invaluable. Steve Lohr's "Data-ism" is the consummate picture of
what Big Data and Data Science is, who and how (they--people and organizations) will make it happen and how it will affect all of contemporary society, big industry, to healthcare, manufacturing and government.

With his traditional sharp journalistic insight, Steve Lohr tells compelling information-rich stories of Big Data, by way of remarkable individuals and bold companies. Stories from Mt. Sinai Hospital, Gallo vineyards, IBM Research, and East and West Coast startups show the fast changing way algorithms are disrupting business, healthcare, and more. Mostly the stories are optimistic, but privacy concerns are covered, with some other dangers such as loss of control, data errors, incorrect predictions, and loss of individual freedoms in the face of big business power. More about education, community safety, government applications, and of course the NSA’s distressing Big Data presence would help. Some readers may want more technical descriptions, but this book makes for compelling fast reading about the personalities, excitement, and challenges for business.

Really???

Ok, the heroine is a law school graduate, studying for the bar, she has also been a model. Now, can you believe this chick is not only a virgin, she has no idea how the whole sex thing works. Is she just stupid or was she home schooled for 19 years? I'm sorry, I just can't buy all this "innocence". The book started off like it was going to be good. Then in a fit of temper she stomps her foot. What are we 5? She lost me right there and it just kept getting worse.

The sheik takes a shine to her but she is determined to not be his baby maker. Honestly, I didn't see what he saw in her to pursue her. Now maybe she needed to be a virgin to marry the ruler of the country, but I just don't buy it. I quit reading after the two of them had sex. She acted so immature and stupid I just couldn't find a thing to like about her. He was ok considering who he was and the way he was raised. I'm sure they live HEA but I didn't bother to finish reading to find out. I really don't recommend this one. I just didn't like it at all.

Don't read if you're looking for any sort of plot...

... or character. This story has no development whatsoever. It took forever for me to even figure out where this book was set. I'd been hoping this would be different from most of the stories about women who live in New York, or California, or Seattle, but nope. This was a quick read, not because you get sucked into it and want to read more, but because it's so poorly developed, it doesn't take long for you to figure out what's going on and pay attention to it.
