This is probably the worse book I've had to read in college
By Andre
This is probably the worse book I've had to read in college. most examples are not clear, it does a poor job at attempting to explain their solutions and reasoning. If I could i would give this book zero stars.

Good book with lots of good materials. Some of the explinations seemed a bit incomplete, causing me to use the internet and other books to search for the correct methods. Otherwise I would have given five starts.

Linux and the Unix Philosophy, by Mike Gancarz

Unlike so many books that focus on how to use Linux, Linux and the Unix Philosophy explores the "way of thinking that is Linux" and why Linux is a superior implementation of this highly capable operating system.

This book is a revision and expansion of a computer science classic. Every chapter has been thoroughly updated with Linux coverage.

Linux and the Unix Philosophy falls squarely between the "softer" texts on iterative software design and project management and the "how-to" technical texts. Thus far, no one has come out with a book that addresses this topic, either in the Unix space or the Linux space. Linux and the Unix Philosophy covers the same ground as the first edition, while it also presents bold new ideas about Linux and Open Source.

· Concise list of philosophy tenets makes it a handy quick reference
· Anecdotal examples personalize the book for the reader
· Conversational style makes it easy and joyful to read

Review

"The concept of Linux and the GNU project, while appearing to be the 'next step' of the Unix Philosophy, is only the return from a wayward path. Everything stated in the Unix Philosophy's first edition is just as true today, perhaps even more so. The addition of source code availability allows you to see exactly how these masters of code created their systems, and challenges you to create even faster code with greater capabilities." -Jon "maddog" Hall, Executive Director, Linux International

"By effectively linking the principles used in Unix with those used by the Linux development community, Gancarz sheds new light on the Open Source philosophy." -Henry L. Hall, CEO, Wild Open Source

Learning Linux is an incredible intelligent investment
By James Bell
If you're considering purchasing this book - let me make this easy. At sixteen years old (1986) I was using DOS with my younger brother on an IBM PC. All I got were beeps and control characters. I had no mentors that understood DOS better than me. Unix had been cooking for 16 years! Why couldn't Unix have been ported to the PC? Fast forward ten years and I had a Bachelor's in Computer Information Systems and I earned a living using MVS/JCL/COBOL II/DB2/CICS/ROSCOE/FILEAID. It took me days to slice and dice text files with JCL/FILEAID - it was like using a screw driver to remove nails. I still remember these JCL and Fileaid syntax. Unix would have made these tasks child's play. Today, my JCL and Fileaid syntax knowledge is worthless. If I'd learned grep awk instead - my skillset would be highly prized for the foreseeable future! In short, learning Unix/Linux syntax is an awesome investment. Why? In case you didn't know Unix/Linux will be going strong when your children's children are dead! This book actually made me sad. Sad that I was 37 years old before I encountered a Mike Gancarz's book that tells the Unix/Linux narrative. If only I'd gotten the message sooner when my mind was a sponge - I'd be so much farther along today! So here goes. If you're an old fart - maybe you should forget Linux - keep paying Microsoft a small fortune to re-badge their OS every 5-7 years. This book will make you see things from a brotherhood perspective. Your brothers want you to use their OS free. Yeah I want more Linux games too. Give them time. But in the mean time invest some time in learning the command line. I swear to you that Linux is logical, and even approachable, regardless how cryptic the command-line flags look at first. Every minute you invest in learning Linux can be passed-on to your kids, grandkids, & so on. Linux is eternal. This book tells you nothing of the syntax but you'll learn the Unix/Linux mindset. I skimmed at parts, but this is a necessary first step. This is where you should start your journey to learn Linux. I share your pain. Chin up - we're in this together.

Gancarz is a philosopher
By C. V. Karayiannis

Five stars for "Linux and the Unix Philosophy" because foremost it is an excellent discussion of the importance of the Open Source revolution.
Also, what this text does is not to repeat the basic Unix design's principles e.g. 'everything in Unix is a file' e.t.c., but instead it focuses in some inspiring and innovative approaches to software engineering, mostly applied in the GNU/Linux world.
It finaly proves in many ways the superiority of GNU/Linux - and Unix in general - in contrast to the other "desktop" systems.
One thing I enjoyed the most is the parallelism between some Unix tenets and corresponding real life examples. Having read a lot of texts about Unix and Open Source Software I deeply recommend this book.

The work does not intend to do more than explain the reason to prefer and to work in a Unix/Linux setting.
The text is well written and conveys its points well.

Not comprehensive
By AT
I was disappointed. The book is not organized in a proper way to look up topics efficiently. The book is presented by chapters that dump a lot of hardcore scientific facts on your head, without the proper explanation of why these facts are important, how they are related to clinical practice. Yes! Absolutely! The book is very distant from clinical practice. I am so sorry to acknowledge that, but there are much useful books for the same price available on the market.

Poorly organized
By Mike
I was disappointed with this book. I was expecting a lot more from an expensive 1,600+ page comprehensive textbook. Really hard to find information when you try to look a topic up. You have to use the Index extensively to find what you need, which is cumbersome and annoying in a book this size. A lot of basic information is left out or buried in chapters where it doesn't actually belong and where you wouldn't think to look.

Gr 4–7—Lincoln Baker, 12, is back. After an otherwise normal day with friends, he realizes that he is being trailed by black cars from Pandora, a top-secret agency. They need Lincoln to once again work with kid spy Benjamin Green. His assignment is to protect the president's daughter, Amy. He soon learns that a man who goes by the name "Dagger" seeks to kill the president while wearing George Washington's Coat, which has gone missing. The pièce de résistance is that the garment makes the wearer invincible. Due to their strong dislike of each other and mutual love of competition, Lincoln and Ben are each determined to solve the mystery first. Along the way, readers meet Amy, an engaging, intelligent, and witty charcter who befriends both sleuths. Lincoln's voice remains clear and consistent; he is sarcastic, quick-witted, and ingenious. Fans of Double Vision (2012) will recall that Linc is an accidental agent, a dead ringer for official spy-kid Ben Green, who is a straight arrow and Linc’s nemesis. The junior agents must infiltrate the oldest spy organization in America; recover the coat of George Washington that is thought to make the wearer invincible; and save the president from an assassination attempt. Linc quickly ditches Ben and teams up with First Daughter Amy and junior-agent gadget-master Henry to try and crack the spy code and track down the coat. This is a hilarious caper, featuring plenty of nifty gadgets and gross-out scenes, led by an authentic, smart-mouthed hero that fans of the Alex Rider and 39 Clues series will love. Double the adventure!
By Think Banned Thoughts
One of my all time favorite middle grade series - Linc Baker is that kid who is always in the wrong place at the wrong time, doing the wrong thing - and who all the same is exactly where he needs to be. He reminds us that more often than not what looks like mistakes and failures are often just steps along the path to success.
I also love how FT Bradley always gives Linc a killer female side-kick and throws in some other powerful female characters throughout the books.
I further love the way she pulls in real history and geography without bogging down the action. We learn so much when we read these books and they always get us excited to travel and take the Linc Baker tour of action!
Let's hope the publisher decides to create some Linc Baker tour maps to go with the deluxe boxed set!

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poorblack tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more.Henrietta's cellshave been bought and sold by the billions, yetshe remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, February 2010: From a single, abbreviated life grew a seemingly immortal line of cells that made some of the most crucial innovations in modern science possible. And from that same life, and those cells, Rebecca Skloot has fashioned in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks a fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival--left them full of pride, anger, and suspicion. For a decade, Skloot doggedly but compassionately gathered the threads of these stories, slowly gaining the trust of the family while helping them learn the truth about Henrietta, and with their aid she tells a rich and haunting story that asks the questions, Who owns our bodies? And who carries our memories? --Tom Nissley

Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks:

Honestly, I can't imagine a better tale.

A detective story that's at once mythically large and painfully intimate.

Just the simple facts are hard to believe: that in 1951, a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks dies of cervical cancer, but pieces of the tumor that killed her--taken without her knowledge or consent--live on, first in one lab, then in hundreds, then thousands, then in giant factories churning out polio vaccines, then aboard rocket ships launched into space. The cells from this one tumor would spawn a multi-billion dollar industry and become a foundation of modern science--leading to breakthroughs in gene mapping, cloning and fertility and helping to discover how viruses work and how cancer develops (among a million other things). All of which is to say: the science end of this story is enough to blow one's mind right out of one's face.

But what's truly remarkable about Rebecca Skloot's book is that we also get the rest of the story, the part that could have easily remained hidden had she not spent ten years unearthing it: Who was Henrietta Lacks? How did she live? How she did die? Did her family know that she'd become, in some sense, immortal, and how did that affect them? These are crucial questions, because science should never forget the people who gave it life. And so, what unfolds is not only a reporting tour de force but also a very entertaining account of Henrietta, her ancestors, her cells and the scientists who grew them.

The book ultimately channels its journey of discovery though Henrietta's youngest daughter, Deborah, who never knew her mother, and who dreamt of one day being a scientist.

As Deborah Lacks and Skloot search for answers, we're bounced effortlessly from the tiny tobacco-farming Virginia hamlet of Henrietta's childhood to modern-day Baltimore, where Henrietta's family remains. Along the way, a series of unforgettable juxtapositions: cell culturing bumps into faith healings, cutting edge medicine collides with the dark truth that Henrietta's family can't afford the health insurance to care for diseases their mother's cells have helped to cure.

Rebecca Skloot tells the story with great sensitivity, urgency and, in the end, damn fine writing. I highly recommend this book. --Jad Abumrad

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Science journalist Skloot makes a remarkable debut with this multilayered story about faith, science, journalism, and grace. It is also a tale of medical wonders and medical arrogance, racism, poverty and the bond that grows, sometimes painfully, between two very different women—Skloot and Deborah Lacks—sharing an obsession to learn about Deborah's mother, Henrietta, and her magical, immortal cells. Henrietta Lacks was a 31-year-old black mother of five in Baltimore when she died of cervical cancer in 1951. Without her knowledge, doctors treating her at Johns Hopkins took tissue samples from her cervix for research. They spawned the first viable, indeed miraculously productive, cell line—known as HeLa. These cells have aided in medical discoveries from the polio vaccine to AIDS treatments. What Skloot so poignantly portrays is the devastating impact Henrietta's death and the eventual importance of her cells had on her husband and children. Skloot's portraits of Deborah, her father and brothers are so vibrant and immediate they recall Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's Random Family. Writing in plain, clear prose, Skloot avoids melodrama and makes no judgments. Letting people and events speak for themselves, Skloot tells a rich, resonant tale of modern science, the wonders it can perform and how easily it can exploit society's most vulnerable people. (Feb.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
In simple, straightforward prose, Skloot brings to life the woman unknowingly behind some of the 20th century's greatest medical advancements. In the process, she exposes the minefield of scientific, legal, and philosophical questions raised by Lacks's unwitting legacy. Skloot, who deftly weaves together the disparate threads of biography, science, and social history, provides a remarkably evenhanded assessment of the shadier dealings of the biomedical industry despite her obvious affection and sympathy for the Lacks family. Scientifically challenged readers will rejoice in Skloot's ability to explain complex technical processes in layperson's terms. Hailed by the New York Times as "the book Ms. Skloot was born to write," The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks "is an important book, one that will linger--like Henrietta's cells--long after you've turned the last page" (Chicago Sun-Times).

Thank you for this beautiful tribute to Henrietta Lacks
By EJ
Wow. This book should be required reading for scientists and students of life. The true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family has finally been told, beautifully, in this book. The book encompasses science, ethics, and the story of a family who was terribly wronged in the pursuit of scientific research. I could gush about this book for pages but I'll try first to hit the main points of why this book is so remarkable in list form for the sake of brevity:

1. The author clearly developed a strong relationship with the Lacks family, which was absolutely critical to ensuring the story was told accurately and with the respect to Henrietta Lacks that was so deeply deserved.

2. The storytelling is amazingly moving despite the need to convey a lot of scientific information. It reads like fiction.

3. Ms. Skloot's research into the science is impeccable.

4. The book is FAIR. It presents the unvarnished truth, obtained DIRECTLY from as many prinicpal people involved in the story as is humanly possible. It would have been easier to simplify the story into heroes vs. villians, but Ms. Skloot deftly handles all sides of the story.

For some detail: I have worked with HeLa cells in the past, but did not know even the barest information about the story of Henrietta Lacks until a few years ago. It simply was not common knowledge, until a few less ethical folks released her name and medical records to the public. This obviously should not have been done without the express permission of the Lacks family, which Ms. Skloot obtained. In the past, others have not been as ethical. The book covers Ms. Lacks' early life, how her cells came to be harvested, and what happened to both the cells and her family afterward.

The contributions of HeLa cells to science are absolutely staggering and cannot be over-stated. The sections where the science was described were clear and accurate. With the story of Ms. Lacks' family interwoven, this book was fairly close to perfect. I found myself moved to tears several times because of the fate of the Lacks family and Henrietta's daughter's indomitable spirit. I do not think anyone but Ms. Skloot could have written this book. She worked with the family for over a decade in order to get the story right. This was critical, as the family had been wronged too many times in the past.

Thank you for this astounding work of art. I will be donating to the Henrietta Lacks foundation in honor of the entire family, and I hope many others will read the book and be similarly moved.

Captivating, engrossing, fascinating, heartbreaking, englightening...ALL in one stellar book!
By Living it up
This is hand's down one of the best books I've read in years and I wish I could give it more stars. It is going to be difficult to capture exactly what makes this book so outstanding and so captivating, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

First of all I want to say I am STUNNED that this is the author's first book. She has poured ten years of her heart, soul, mind and her life in general in this book. What she has given birth to in that long period of labor is worthy of her sacrifice and honors Henrietta Lacks and her family.

Other reviews have given the outline of this amazing story. What I want to stress is that Ms. Skloot has navigated the difficult terrain of respecting Mrs. Lacks and her family, while still telling their story in a very intimate, thorough, factual manner. What readers may not know is that the Lacks family isn't just a "subject" that the author researched. This is a real family with real heartaches and real challenges whose lives she entered into for a very long season. The Lacks' family has truly benefitted from the author's involvement in their life and that is something I am very appreciative of. I believe that Ms. Skloot was able to give Henrietta's daughter, Deborah, a real sense of healing, deliverance, peace and identity that she had been searching for her whole life...that story alone would have made the book for me.

It would have been very easy for the author to come across as condescending or patronizing or possibly as being exploitive as she wrote about a family that is poor and uneducated. Instead the story is infused with compassion and patience as she not only takes the family along with her on a journey to understand their current situation and the ancestor whose life was so rich in legacy but poor in compensation; she educates the family in the process. I get the sense that the author grew to genuinely love Henrietta and her family. I am in awe of this level of commitment.

The author has managed to explain the complex scientific information in a way that anyone can comprehend and be fascinated by. The author's telling of the science alone and the journey of Henrietta's immortal cells (HeLa) would have made the book a worthy read in itself. Ms. Skloot and Henrietta captured me from page one all the way to the final page of the book. I read it in one pass and I didn't want it to end.

The author manages to beautifully tell multiple stories and develops each of those stories so well that you can't help but be consumed by the book. This is the story of Henrietta. It is the story of her sweet and determined daughter, Deborah. It is the story of the extended Lacks family and their history. It is a story of race/poverty/ignorance and people who take advantage of that unfortunate trifecta. It is a story about science and ethics. It is a story that should make each of us reflect on the sacrifices made by individual humans and animals that have allowed us to benefit so much from "modern" medicine. It is a story about hope and perseverance. It is a story about love and healing.

I cannot imagine a single person I know who wouldn't love this book and benefit from reading it. I will be purchasing the final copy of the book and am looking forward to reading the book again.

I am counting the days til Ms. Skloot writes another book and can't wait to attend one of her upcoming lectures. A fan is born!

2010 Non-Fiction Award Winner?
By R PRIUS
As I recall this book was categorized as CANCER, I believe it might be more aptly described as science based non-fiction. In the last two decades I've seen occasional news items alluding to human cells taken from a black woman in the 1950's that have been replicated millions of times. The cells are referred to as HeLa and on the face of it I wouldn't have thought there was much of a story behind the extraction of these cells and their use by the biomed industry. However, this book dispells that rather naive assumption completely and puts a name and a face, a family, and a story behind the contents of many petri dishes and slides. THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS explains how the cells were obtained, replicated, distributed, and used without informed consent of the owner and family by John Hopkins and how they benefitted mankind w/o compensation to the family. Author Skloot tells the story of a family victimized by socioeconomic conditions and racism that can't get fundamental things like health coverage while these cells make a lot of money for the health establishment. It is a disturbing read that will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. It may also make the reader take a long hard look at the need for standardized health care in our society among many other things.
The one thing that I found fascinating about this book is how Skloot managed to take a generally dry topic that might have been addressed in a scientific textbook and humanized it on a very personal level by developing a close relationship with Henrietta's family. The input received from the family took this book to a higher level and made it a very personsl story. From my perspective, it was very hard not to get involved with the Lacks family and not feel their sense of betrayal and loss.

About the Cover

The molecular details of life tell a story that starts with the information in DNA and proceeds through many steps to protein function, such as ATP synthesis. We want students to become familiar with this story by delving into the chemical details of cellular structure and metabolic function, by learning how to explore molecular images such as those shown on the cover, and by seeing the relationships—sometimes circular—that link one topic to another. Throughout FUNDAMENTALS OF BIOCHEMISTRY, FOURTH EDITION, you'll find guidance—specific features that enhance student learning—to help you find your way through the biochemical details and enjoy the story.

The images arranged in a circle on the cover of this textbook are part of that story, symbolizing the pathway through which hereditary information is expressed. Clockwise from twelve o'clock: DNA; the nucleosome; DNA polymerase I in complex with DNA; RNase P in complex with tRNA; the ribosome in complex with three tRNAs; and F1–ATPase. These images are based on X-ray structures that were respectively determined by Richard Dickerson and Horace Drew, Caltech; Gerard Bunick, University of Tennessee; Thomas Steitz, Yale University; Alfonso Mondragn, Northwestern University; Venki Ramakrishnan, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, U.K.; and Andrew Leslie and John Walker, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, U.K.

This looks to be a fantastic text, however it does NOT come with an access code for Wiley Plus access code. That will run you another 95 dollars. I was expecting it to come with access to the online component.

My main issue with the text was the homework problems. They don't help with understanding of the material and are very random- some of them there is no way you would no the answer without having to use google. The actual context and illustrations were good... it was really just the problems that bothered me.

Excellent for Structural Biochemistry, Sub-optimum for Metabolism
By Ryan
Hello everyone, I am currently borrowing this book from a friend so I did not purchase it myself. I rated this book three stars due to it not being optimum for the study of biochemistry from a mechanistic standpoint. I am currently in biochemistry 2 at my university which is heavily pathway/metabolism emphasized. This book was excellent for biochemistry 1 which prioritized the study of the structure/function of the different bio-molecules. Voet, Voet, and Pratt do an excellent job teaching structural biochemistry which is reflected in how they wrote the book. Although they cover the pathways and every topic learned in my course, their structural-bias made learning the pathways very difficult with this text. Essentially, the pathways become convoluted with structural elements to the point where the purpose of the pathway is lost among the individual molecules. This is VERY useful as a highly detailed reference, but if you are studying the pathways I highly suggest getting a medical biochemistry book and using this to supplement your learning.

Good luck!

This is an excellent introduction to the physics of motion and forces for the young student!
By Deb
When we talk about the word "force," we are talking about a "push or pull." There are always forces around us. For example when someone is pushing someone else on a swing, force is being used. You can usually see what happens when force is being used. It is easy to see force when a truck is pulling a boat, but if leaves are swirling around, "sometimes the cause of a force is invisible." One other example is gravity or magnetism. You can't see the force that holds a magnet on your refrigerator, but you know a force is in action. Forces also "put things in motion." A few examples are when you pull a wagon, the "pushing and pulling your pencil" when you need to write, and its effect when you push a toy car.

There is also a difference in the strength of a force. For example when you throw a ball hard a "strong force" will make it go further. On the other hand if you gently push on a toy boat, it will only "move a short distance from you." It is easy to understand that an object's weight will make a difference in how much force you'll need to move it away from you or pick it up. In this book you will also learn about force and its relationship with direction and speed, how forces can "make things stop moving" or allow something to continue through it, the relationship of an object's weight and the force needed to stop them, you'll learn about friction and how it "slows things down or makes them stop," and how force can change the shape of objects.

This is an excellent introduction to the physics of motion and forces for the young student. The concepts put forth in this book are very easy to understand. Both the text and its accompanying photographs will enable the fluent reader to enjoy learning a bit about elementary physics in a fun manner. For example, we can see a baseball shattering a piece of glass and the student learns from a caption that "A glass window has less force than a brick wall, so a ball may sail right through it. That's bad news for whoever hit the ball." This is the type of book that is an excellent choice to read and discuss during circle or story time. In the back of the book are directions for a "Ball Toss Game," an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.

The Thought Readers (Mind Dimensions Book 1), by Dima Zales, Anna Zaires

A new series about mind readers from a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author

Everyone thinks I’m a genius.

Everyone is wrong.

Sure, I finished Harvard at eighteen and now make crazy money at a hedge fund. But that’s not because I’m unusually smart or hard-working.

It’s because I cheat.

You see, I have a unique ability. I can go outside time into my own personal version of reality—the place I call “the Quiet”—where I can explore my surroundings while the rest of the world stands still.

I thought I was the only one who could do this—until I met her.

My name is Darren, and this is how I became entangled with all the Russians and learned that I’m a Reader.

Interesting storyline, can't wait for more. (No spoilers)
By CPO
This book had a very interesting storyline. I enjoyed it immensely.
Darren has the ability to freeze time. He doesn't know why or how this is possible but I love how he lives his life doing what he does. One day, he runs into someone who also has this gift. At this time in the story, this exact moment, I knew I was hooked and I needed to know more. Mira was intreuging to me, she can do what he does, but she lives a completely different life than Darren.
As the story unfolds, Darren learns that he has more abilities than he thought and it was fun watching him experiment with his gift. Imagine if you could stop the world and then read peoples minds. That would be incredibly interesting right? Well reading it through Darrens eyes was so much fun.
Darren gets wrapped up in gaining knowledge and information (from others who share this ability) which put him in some compromising and dangerous situations. The suspense and danger kept me interested and had me trying to think about what could potentially happen.
This story ends at a point where I could *almost* forsee what was ahead and I just can't wait to read it and see if it will go the direction I think or if the author will twist the events. Very good book, very interesting... I loved it.

A fantastic modern science fiction story!
By Umaro
(Spoiler free!)

Being a fan of science fiction, I am always on the lookout for good, engaging stories.

I don't normally listen/read sci-fi based in the real world (I prefer more fictional stories), however I found 'The Thought Readers' to be a wonderfully engaging book.

The concept is interesting right from the start, as we re introduced to Darren, the protagonist who can essentially stop time around him - what he calls 'The Quiet' - while being completely unaffected himself. The way he narrates this to the reader/listener is engaging and draws you into the world, I found myself eager to learn of his next experience with 'The Quiet'.

The pace of the book is fairly rapid, with interesting events and scenarios on a very regular basis. Combined with the excellent storyline full of unexpected turns, there is never a dull moment, and I was hooked from start to finish. In fact, my only complaint is that it was all over a little too soon!

As for Darren himself, he is certainly a likeable protagonist. The author does an excellent job with his development as he changes slowly through the story, creating a very well fleshed-out character that you truly care about.
The Narrator is also good, with a nice consistant voice and decent character distinction. It made for comfortable listening throughout the story.Though I most identified the voice with Darren himself, as the ebook is told from his point of view.

If you like Science-Fiction with a modern twist and a genuinely intrigueing story, then pick this book up, you won't regret it.

The Thought Readers by Dima Zales – 3/5
By Alexander Crommich
Darren is a young man with the ability to step out of his body into a frozen mock-up of the world called the Quiet. While there, he can manipulate any physical object he desires to gather information, but upon exiting he returns to the real world at the exact moment he left it, and none of the physical changes take hold. Thus, he can explore as much of the world as he want in what amounts to a paused state, reading entire novels and rifling through a hundred people’s pockets in what to us is less than a millisecond. The novel kicks off when he discovers a young woman in an Atlantic City casino who shares this power.

Although the book has an interesting hook and is a snappy read, it feels more like an extended introduction than a full length novel. Too much time gets spent explaining Darren’s powers and fleshing out the world. Besides Darren, none of the characters amount to anything more than shallow caricatures. Finally, the novel reaches an abrupt climax that solidifies the sense that it’s a lengthy introduction to a longer book.

For most of the novel, the reader is either being told how Darren’s powers work, how people with his powers fit into the world, or the motivations and backgrounds of the various characters. It felt like reading a dossier concerning the world rather than a story set within it.

Even when there’s action, it’s constantly broken up by trips to the Quiet. Rather than walking the reader through every one, it would have been more interesting to show us the results without telling us what Darren had learned. He could use the information and then let the reader in on what it was in the first place, or just hint at it. The difference is akin to having Sherlock Holmes tell us exactly how he’s solving a case as he does so, rather than springing it on the reader at the end. As it is, there was never a sense of mystery.

In addition, Darren is the only character with any depth. The story is told from his perspective in the first person, so the reader has ample time to get to know him, and there are some interesting quirks to his character that make the process entertaining. Unfortunately, all of the other characters have neatly assigned roles. There’s a hacker, a love interest, a mad scientist whose job it is to dump more information about how the powers work, etcetera. That’s not a problem on its own, but nothing interesting happens with the characters to make them stand out.

The one that bothered me in particular was Darren’s love interest. She cries, scowls, tantrums, and smart-alecks her way through the book, but never in a way that makes her feel real. Sure, she has a rough past that would stress someone in her position, but her emotional reactions did not feel natural. It was more like the author flicked a switch in the middle of a scene. One moment she would be self-assured, the next nearly in tears over the same event that theoretically toughened her up in the first place.

Finally, there’s the climax. The book ended right at the point that the story had moved past all of the information dumps and started rolling ahead. There’s a kidnapping, a rescue, and a quick twist that, in most books, would mark the end of the introduction. Here, however, it marks a “to be continued” that left me unsatisfied. It was a taste of what the second book will hold, a book that, as set up, I find far more intriguing than the one I read through.

It’s unfortunate that the novel has the issues that it does, because there’s a genuinely entertaining story buried beneath them. It left me wanting more like any good rainy day read should, and I still found the whole setup interesting despite the flaws. That said, I have to give this one a 3/5.
